In January, I wrote that Perth Zoo’s Asian elephant, Trisha, turned 65 and was given an appropriate cake. You can catch up here if you’d like to: https://www.mylot.com/post/3493882/tricia-turns-65 Sadly, Trisha has now died. One of the oldest elephants in the world, Trisha died of age-related conditions. She arrived in Perth in January, 1963, and came from Ho Chi Minh City (then Saigon) via Singapore. A keeper said that Tricia ‘lived through an era when zoos were a random collection of animals kept for human enjoyment’. She was named after the 1962 Miss Australia, Tricia Reschke. After living in a concrete enclosure for the start of her stay, the enclosure gradually changed to include a swimming pool, trees, a mud wallow, scratching poles, a heated barn, and sleeping mounds. In 1992, she was joined by three young elephants from Malaysia. The two remaining Perth elephants will now be rehomed in other states to be part of a herd setting. Perth Zoo doesn’t have the room to accommodate elephants in a herd situation. I don't have a photo of Trisha but the one I've used shows elephants in the Singapore Zoo.

Sorry to hear about Trisha. Elephants live long, I dont think it was an appropriate age for her to leave this world.

They said she was one of the oldest elephants around but I haven't researched how long they usually live.

@oahuwriter Some who saw her as children would bring their own children to see her.

I am sorry to know that Trisha is no more. It is very true that animals in zoos were not kept in good conditions, but only for humans to look at them. This reminds me an episode of Twilight Zone, humans captured my aliens and kept in a "house-alike" habitat so that the aliens could look at them.

Yes, I agree on animals in zoos are not kept in good condition. They are kept like a slave. I have visited Zoo in my city and I feel sorry for the animals I saw there.

That would have been an interesting episode of Twilight Zone. It's good that the other two elephants will be moved.

@sjvg1976 Most zoos are better now than they used to be which is at least something.

I love elephants. I'm glad to see that her life got better. Just being in a concrete enclosure must have been horrible. I hope she was happy with companions and trees and plants to make her more comfortable. RIP Trisha!

@JudyEv I'm glad. Since they are captives, they deserve good conditions with the things they need to survive and feel happy.

The zoo is much better now than it once was. All the enclosures are much more animal-friendly.

@JudyEv You are right since the elephant was treated well inside of the zoo.

Knowing that she has already passed away is sad. However, it appears that she had a better life there than she had at home. It appears that she was well cared for in her place for her old age. With their new homes, I hope the other elephants will live lives that are much freer.

She must have been well cared for I guess or she wouldn't have lived so long. It's good the other elephants are being rehomed to somewhere with more space.

@JudyEv Glad that zoos are evolving to become a better place for the animals and not just caged in small spaces.

They did look after her well and she was well loved. People who knew her when they were kids were taking their own kids to see her. She had also 'sold' some paintings to raise funds for various causes.

I remember when we lost the elephant in our zoo many decades ago. The children sent cards and flowers.

They would make a big thing of her birthdays. Of course, it helped draw the crowds too so more money for the zoo.

Wow, what a long life for an elephant! Wonder how long the oldest elephant lived to? 65 would be considered pretty old before medical advances increased life expectancy.

The average for Asian elephants is said to be 48 years but of course, except for being free, all her other needs would be catered for at the zoo.

For Asian elephants like Tricia it is usually about 48 years so she got well past that figure.

Poor Trisha, may she rest in peace. It is true that many zoos have no conditions to have animals, it is better to keep the animals in their habits and leave them to live their lives.

That's very true but some zoos do good work now in breeding species that are endangered.
