Along with looking at songs that are 40 years old I’m also spending the month looking at songs that are also FIFTY years old. Imagine that! Here’s another incredible song from 1972 that a lot of people know, even though it’s that “old.”
I Can See Clearly Now - Johnny Nash
Oh, no! At the risk of incurring the wrath of the people who didn’t like the optimism of “The Happiest Girl in the Whole U.S.A.,” here’s another happy-happy-joy-joy song.
Although Johnny Nash was from Texas, he had spent time in Jamaica with Bob Marley, absorbing reggae and rocksteady music. As a result, you can hear the influence of reggae in this song.
Oh, and for you thinking Nash was a one-hit wonder, he was also part of the combo who did the 50s hit “The Teen Commandments.”
Nash passed away in 2020. He did have other songs, but this is his lasting legacy. Not a bad one to have, if you ask me!
I Can See Clearly Now
Written by Johnny Nash
Recorded by Johnny Nash
From I Can See Clearly Now, 1972
(Today’s 1982 song: “My City Was Gone”)
I think I can make it now:

And another song that was over-played when I was a senior in High School.

Holy cow, two days in a row you’ve know a song? Are you feeling okay?
I do love this song, because I don’t hear it all that much anymore.

@DaddyEvil — maybe you live within my “long distance hypnotism” range.

@FourWalls I'm beginning to think I must have bumped my head somewhere.
You know how much I listen to songs.

That would depend on where you were. I honestly believe that El Paso was way behind the rest of the country when it came to just about anything.
A lot of stations around here through the mid 70s played a lot of 50s music, not exactly my style though, I stuck with a FM station that played Rock n Roll til I got an 8 track player, then I got tapes by CCR, Grand Funk Railroad, Doors, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd etc etc. Damn, I miss that old thing.

That was the great thing about the 70s: you could hear Alice Cooper or BTO on the same radio station right after this song!

One of my favourites and we sing it often, especially at our big sports events that get rained out - you can just imagine the impact of the song sung at a cricket stadium by 30 thousand people all in sync - Loud and glorious. Thanks for the memory!

Hey, Dena!!!! Just out of total curiosity….how do you feel about this song?
What’s not to love about it? Good vocals, lovely message, and an enchanting rhythm.

@LindaOHio — looking at the list, I’m thinking there may be one 1982 song that you do know and one 1972 song that you don’t from here on out.

@FourWalls Yeah, something is wrong! It's so nice to get a break from the country songs.

Hard to believe that song is from 1972. I really would have thought it was more recent

It’s one of those timeless songs that actually has a starting point.

I know a great joke which relates to this.
A guy was married to Lorraine but had fallen in love with Deidre. He pushed Lorraine off a cliff then sang 'I can see Deidre now, Lorraine has gone'.
Boom, boom. You need to pad it out a bit maybe.

I love those kinds of puns. I saw one on Facebook the other day about a guy who had a recipe for Moroccan rolls with fresh thyme. His thyme was three years old but he used it anyway because he liked old-thyme Moroccan roll (old-time rock and roll).

@FourWalls That's a goodie. And there is one I've forgotten but it's ends up something 'pardon me boys, is that the cat that chewed your new shoes'. (Chattanooga choo choo)

It had terrific optimism in it, and it is appropriate after bad weather.

That was a good one. I'm surprised it's on video though. But he probably performed for TV, so I guess maybe not so surprising after all.

A lot of people credit the Monkees’ TV show with “inventing the video.” I’ve also noticed that there are “performance” videos for a number of African-American singers in the 70s.

Oh you’re just funnin’ with me now.
Funny how these old songs seep into our lives even though we don’t search them out.
