Can you believe this song is half a century old now? That’s what this entire month has been about: looking at songs that we still hear on the radio today and realizing they came out in 1972. Look at all these songs you know that are older that you are in some cases! Tomorrow the top ten starts, so here’s the last alphabetically-listed song from 50 years ago.
You’re So Vain - Carly Simon
Yes, for fifty years, now, we’ve been trying to figure out who the bleep this song is about! Carly Simon has been so vague, she probably thinks this post is about her!!!
Eventually she did admit that part of the song was about Warren Beatty. (She said that, long before she divulged/confirmed that, Beatty called her and thanked her for the song. ) She has been less forthcoming about the other verses, except to say they were NOT about her then-husband James Taylor. She has also denied that Mick Jagger, who sang backup on this song, is the subject of the ire.
C’mon, Carly. This is a great song, and we’re not going to stop listening to us if you reveal who the other subjects of the song might be!

Every time I hear this song I think of the scene in that Kate Hudson/Matthew McCoghannhey (i can never spell that name) movie.

Yeah, you’d think he’d take a stage name like “Jones.” Good thing they don’t put stars’ names on the movie marquees anymore.

I really enjoy listening to this one. I am glad Carly finally divulged who it was about. I had heard several stories down through the years.

I think the Warren Beatty guess was the most obvious, simply because she never denied it.

It’s one of those songs that gets overplayed and can turn off a lot of people who used to like it. I understand.

People have had a long list of people it could be about (Beatty the #1 selection), which goes to show egotism isn’t a rarity. Especially in the entertainment world.

If he called Carly to thank her for writing this song, I’d say he probably was a little on the vain side.

I didn't know this was about Warren Beatty. I can see how this could be a song about him.

She says it’s a composite of people, with the second verse being about Beatty.

I enjoy it, too. I get to hear it when I want to now. One of the benefits of not having the radio on.

Carly could have followed this tune up with one called "You're So Vague." And revealed who the song was about in the lyrics. Did not know Mick sang backup on the tune, interesting...
Guess Ms. Simon had some "clouds in her coffee" when pressed on who specifically this song was about!
