My Brother's Surprise

Here in Alabama, summers bring lots of surprises. The weather, for one, is always a surprise. We don't know if it will be excruciatingly hot, cool breeze, a sudden tornado, a series of expected thunderstorms, a mini drought, or an invasion of critters. During the summer, Alabama boasts of a host of mosquitos, gnats, ants, bees, flees, and snakes. Last week, my brother found one of these critters on the runner of his truck. He was getting in his truck to go to work. Before he stepped up on the runner, he said he had the strongest, weirdest feeling to look down. He did and their coiled up was a rattlesnake. He cautiously, and quietly went around to the other side of his truck to find something to kill it. When he opened the passenger door, he saw throught the window that the snake was crawling off. He quickly got into his truck and ran it over. This was kind of scary for all of us, just knowing that if he had stepped down before he looked, that snake would have bit him. Now we are all on our guard, paying attention to our surroundings. The creepy crawlies are my least favorite part of Alabama summers, followed closely by those mini droughts. Anything that puts us in danger or interferes with our way of life is not my idea of a good time.

In my former neighborhood which was near a river and a water plant, due to the tall grass in the field, sometimes small snakes would be in the area across the street from the home.

I bet there were a lot of them. High grass and water are favorite habitat of snakes.

That would have given me a heart attack. I'm deathly afraid of snakes. Thank goodness your brother got out of that situation safely!

Yes, we gave God thanks for that one. I hate snakes.

Yes it was. I told him, God warned him and told him to look down.

Oh wow, that would indeed be very scary. So lucky that he felt he should look down.

Wow! What an unpleasant surprise. Good thing he looked down before getting into his truck.

yep, I was glad he was able to kill it to before it got to our animals or one of us.
