I am a single mom. I really need to drop 25 pounds or I'm gonna be insulin dependent within a year my doctor says. Any suggestions on how to lose weight and keep it off. I'm on a very low budget so buying a lot of food etc. will not work for me. I can't afford a gym membership right now either. Help!!!

I lost almost 20 pounds by doing just a few things
1) drink mostly water (as I drink a diet soda) Its cheap and it has negative calories. I try to only drink water but it gets boring
2) Stop eating 3 hours before going to bed. It cost nothing and your body digesat the food while you are still active and burn it off. if you eat right before bed it just sits there, no good
3) read the packages of the food you eat. understand what your putting into your body will help you stop eating the bad things, if you dont understand what an ingrediant is for, look it up on the web
4) cut out FAST FOOD is is the worse thign for you and it will save you money!
5) walk jog, ruun, or anything that burn calories
6) Remeber your not dieting your are changeing your life style
7) loosing waeight is a simple formula, burn more calories then you take in.
hope this help. I lost 20 lbs in 5 months by doing this. It may sound like a slow weight loss but remember you didnt wake up one morning and gain 100 lbs over night. I am still loosing I have about 20 more to go to get to my goal, good lick in yours

The not eating before bedtime I know that's true. But it's so hard by the time I get the kids settled I haven't eaten since lunch and I'm starving. I think I need to do an overview of our routine and develop a better plan. Congratulations on your weight loss, and good luck with achieving your goal.

All I can do is try. The good news is I can't afford fast food. The bad news is I can't afford fast food (lol). I hate hamburgers and I don't like french fries. But, losing this baby weight is really hard this time.

you know what...if you find out, just let me know...lol
yeah i'm in the same boat as you. i used to ask people and they would just say buy more vegtables, but we live pay check to pay check and i have 4 mouths to feed and at times its either buy a lot of food that isn't so healthy (IE-saimin,hotdogs,etc...things my kids will eat) or buy a little healthy food that my kids won't eat and it won't last. are you diabetic?? i'm at risk. i need to lose more then 50lbs before i can safly get pregnant again and to avoid becoming diabetic. i can't afford gym member ships easier. the most i can offer you is eat smaller meals...just snack all day and your metabolism will start to increase. you should be eating 6 small meals a day. you can walk...i like doing home exersize thngs. i have some and i've recorded some from the TV, i've also download some exersise DVD and videos from bittorents...those are free. make a small purchase for weights, weight lifting is always good. those are some things i have, but the most part is to just be deterimind...i know its hard...i have a hard time. good luck to both of us..?

Well, walk more, walk fast, drink lots of water, swim, eat little less than the required diet and run as much as you can.

simply changing your eating habits and moving around more is a great way to start...I'm not sure what your eating habits are like but for me cutting out sweets other than the occassional treat, cutting out sugar in my coffee and tea, eating more fruits and veggies (fresh when possible), eating less take out/deep fried/heavy cream sauced etc foods is a big help. As far as moving more..park farther away from the door at work/school/mall etc...take the stairs instead of elevator...during commerical breaks get up and move like do crunches, jumping jacks, lunges etc....when the mood strikes turn up the tunes and dance! go for walks when weather allows it..there are lots of things you can do that dont cost money and may actually save you money really (eating habit changes can save you a bundle)

I don't have really terrible eating habits, but we all could improve. I use splenda in my coffee and tea. I am diabetic. Fresh fruits and veggie I buy when my budget will allow. I'll try the moving aroud thiough, because that's an excellent idea.

Healthy food is always a lot more expensive than junk food unfortunatly. However try to eat as healthy food as you budget allows you to. Regarding the gym membership then don't worry, you can easily get exersice outside the gym. Go for a walk, or a run if you like. Live near water? Go for a swim, and so on, you just have to be creative:-)

I disagree....organic maybe but that isnt necessary....buying salad fixings is cheaper than buying chips, dip and pop..at least where I am it is..and always by fresh foods when they are in season and from local growers..and when it comes to non perishables...just dont by brand name cause thats what nails you more often than not..you're paying for the name not the product inside....

Yea but the thing is you dont have to buy organic...as much as I would like to I just cant afford it mysefl ya know but I can afford to buy fresh fruits and veggies (especially in the summer here cause there are so many farms) and if you live in an area where you can have your own garden I HIGHLY recommend that! When I was still in Canada I had a great garden adn it was so much cheaper, I knew what I was getting and it was always available LOL..

I have researched this subject somewhat. I was at a loss for ideas, but on an average organic foods cost aroud $0.29 more. Which may not be a lot to some people but it it for me. But, organic also has more good carbs because of the lack of pestisides etc. I think on somethings I'll try it for a while and see.

Some of the things that are very good for diabetics and weight loss can be very inexpensive, like eating more fiber. Beans are a great source of fiber and protein. Eat them in combination with a whole grain food (cornbread is my favorite) for a complete protein.lApples are high in fiber that will help you feel full. That is why grapefruit are a good diet food too. I like splenda, but the diabetics in my family say it still messes up their metabolism, so they prefer honey in small amounts because it is slower to break down. For your general food budget, look into food coops, they help you get more for your money. Maybe, since you have a newborn, you can trade off care with another young mom to each watch the kids for a set amount of time while you walk. I have not researched it, but I have heard of babycises where you play with your baby and benefit by the weight training aspect and or resistance. Probably find it on an internet search.

Walk. You should be walking 10,000 steps a day. You can purchase a pedometer for cheap. Start out by seeing how many steps you usually take a day and then increase it every day until you reach 10,000.

i am wearing similar shoes. i have two kids and they are never out of my site. walking isn't exactly an option. however, i did invest in some free weights...very inexpensive. i make a point to eat healthy...special k and fat free milk for breakfast. fruits, yogurt, etc. i do lunges around the house, crunches, jumping jacks or whatever i can do indoors. it sounds silly but if you can just keep yourself moving through the day the weight begins dropping. try to do it first thing in the morning while you are still half asleep. the next thing you know you are wide awake and feel great all day.

If you completely cut out soda that will help you tremedously! Then there is portion control! Don't eat until your stuffed, just eat until you are comfortable. Don't snack during the day. If your hungry eat a meal, don't eat all day long. Don't make excuses. I noticed a lot of your responses were "yeah but.." "that's expensive..." don't ask for help and then make excuses for it. Before you have a meal drink a glass of water, that will help fill you up faster without eating as much. I've been trying to lose some baby weight as well and I have been just eating Total cereal for breakfast and lunch (follow the recommended serving) and I have lost a couple pounds. Losing weight is possible if you really want to and you stick to it!

I found this on a website 2 days ago( don't remember name) and it was talking about losing 10 lbs in 10 days. Since your body uses sugar for energy, let your body use your stored energy( body fat). With this said, cut out all sugars and starches( a sugar)and your body will automatically use itslef as the energy source. My mom was trying out this diet that realy worked. I don't know what the ingredients were, but it used grapefruits( natural metabolism booster), and I think this is it. I was thinking about trying it out myself.
Breakfast:
* Half grapefruit or 8 oz. Glass of unsweetened grapefruit juice
* 2 eggs: any style (fry your eggs in butter)
* 2 slices of bacon
* 1 cup of coffee or tea (black)
Lunch:
* Half grapefruit or 8 oz. Glass of unsweetened grapefruit juice
* Meat, any style, or fish
* Salad with sugarless dressing
* 1 cup of coffee or tea (black)
Dinner:
* Half grapefruit or 8 oz. Glass of unsweetened grapefruit juice
* Meat, any style, or fish (gravy must not be made with flour)
* Salad (as much as you can eat) with sugarless dressing
* Red, green or yellow vegetables, as much as you want (but no potatoes or corn!)
* 1 cup of coffee or tea (black)
Bedtime Snack:
* Tomato juice or skimmed milk
Special Instructions:
1. Eat at each meal until you are full.
2. Don't eliminate anything, but make wise substitutions, if necessary.
3. Grapefruit is important; it starts the fat-burning process.
4. Only one cup of coffee per meal.
5. No eating between meals.
6. This diet eliminates all sugar & starch. (Fry your eggs in butter; do not use artificial sweeteners.)
7. Use butter generously on vegetables.
8. Eat until you are stuffed. The more you eat of the proper combination, the more weight you will lose.
9. Use as many organic ingredients as possible.
I too am on a budget, so let me know how it works.

How fantastic is that? I've started this morning. I'll tell you how it turns out. But I really need to change my life style if I want to keep the weight off I know. I'm gonna use this for the first 10 pounds and try to gradually re work it so it works for me.

my mother is diabetic, she eats nuts to help regulate her sugar......i never worried about my weight until i turned 40, so i think that i am probably older than you, but weight issues are "simple" you must burn off more calories than you take in......keep track of every last thing that you eat and the calories, pay attention to "serving" size and you'll be surprised to learn a lot of "diet" foods are not low in calories, i exercise in the morning when my metabolism is slow, and i try not to eat late at night....drink water and water and water - remember that its a lifestyle change not a diet
