Georgy Girl and Judith Durham

Yesterday, I wrote that Judith Durham of the Seekers had passed away. I wasn’t surprised that some of our American members hadn’t heard of her although they were very popular in the UK as well as in Australia. It was a long time ago. However, they might remember the title tune from the film ‘Georgy Girl’. The song was one of the Seekers’ hits. @rebelann1949 kindly put up a link to ‘This is Your Life’ which aired on Australia TV in 1997. In the program, there are messages to Judith from Sarah Ferguson (Prince Andrew’s ex-wife), Vanessa Redgrave and Olivia Newton-John. Vanessa played Georgy Girl and pays tribute to Judith, believing the song and Judith’s rendition of it lifted the film out of the ordinary and into the limelight. Hopefully, the link will work if you want to have a listen: The Seekers - Georgy Girl (1967 - Stereo) - Bing video The photo is mine. Edit: It was Lynn Redgrave in the movie, not Vanessa. Sorry for the error. I just heard it wrong on the programme.

I love “Georgy Girl.” There were so many great songs by the Seekers/New Seekers in the 60s. What a tremendous loss to music we have with her passing.

@JudyEv — that’d be easy. Except for Slim Dusty the only Australian acts I’ve heard of are the ones that made it big internationally.

@FourWalls I don't feel quite so bad now - not knowing lots of your artists.

She had such a powerful voice and so pure. I felt sure you would have heard of her. One day, I must try to come up with someone you've never heard of!!! Wouldn't that be cool??

Thanks for the mention. I remember watching Georgy Girl way back and I really liked that song. Today Olivia Newton John passed away. Bummer, she was another really good singer from Australia.

Well, the Seekers were a popular band in the 1960s but I'm not sure if the younger generations would remember them.

Yes, another one gone. She might be better known in America than Judith was. I wonder if there will be a third.

Love the picture you posted. Was trying to figure out if it is a real flower or painted. All the petals seem so perfectly placed.

The Seekers was very popular in the Philippines when I was a young boy, their songs were always played on the radio. Georgy girl was a hit but my favorite was " I'll Never Find Another You " RIP Judith.

I remember that song from the movie. They were quite a popular 60's group and the first to achieve chart success in the U.S./UK. Interesting that Olivia Newton-John recorded a new version of this song for the soundtrack of the 2011 movie A Few Best Men. Two memorable Aussies... RIP.

Georgy Girl was a hit. The Seekers had many good songs like The Carnival is Over, I'll never find another you; A World of Our Own etc.

It was a shame they broke up so soon but she has explained why lots of times and it all makes sense. They did do more great songs in later years. Bruce Woodley wrote I Am Australian which has just about become an anthem for us.
