New project on the horizon (maybe)

August 11, 2022 3:44am CST
So yesterday my husband was supposed to have a day off. He was given extra days off because he worked all the major holidays here in Zambia in the last four months. So we woke up I was drinking my morning coffee he was enjoying his morning tea and around 9:00 o’clock in the morning the phone rang and he was called into work. Of course he went he always goes even though he doesn’t have to. I was just adjusting to spending my day working (I also took a day off so we can spend the day together) when he walked through the door around 11. I asked him what’s wrong why is he home so early to which he replied that he missed me. Now, I knew something was up because this man forgets to drink water and eat let alone miss me while he is at work. He was like this during Med school as well I had to bring him water and food and make him take a 10 minute break while studying. So I knew something happened at work I just didn’t know what. My husband doesn’t like to talk about problems at work because there is actually nothing he can do. Most of his frustrations stem from the lack of resources. So he went straight to the kitchen and started cooking. While cooking he was listening to Lucky Dube and I immediately knew what the problem was and what made him h angry. There was probably yet another patient with a gangrenous foot that needed amputation due to an unchecked diabetes. He sees a lot of people like that and it always makes him feel very angry and helpless because most of the patients he sees are unaware that they have a disease because they do not have constant access to a hospital. My suspicions were confirmed later. So over the weekend I invited 10 of our friends that work in a hospital and my goal is for us to create a budget between us and try and buy blood sugar meters or CGM (continuous glucose monitor). We can start with 10 and already distribute them to the patients that they know don’t have the means to get them for themselves and they’ve been diagnosed with diabetes and then from there we can expand. I’m hoping they’ll be on board because I’ve had this idea for a while I just can’t do it by myself so hopefully I’ll get some people on board and start developing this project. The photo is mine. It’s the lunch my husband made yesterday while he was distressing.

So l guess your husband is a doctor. A worthwhile but very stressful job - especially when you care about your patients. What you plan to do is great and very charitable and l wish you all success. By the way Lucky Dube is one of my favorite artistes. I have most of his live shows on tape.

That's a great project. Indeed many have this disease. So, they have to take maintenance meds, exercise, and watch their diet. Most especially in old age when Type 2 is more common among people who are immobile most of the time, I salute you for this project.

Sorry no photo shown. Your husband's profession needs a No answer if there's a patient in need of immediate treatment. Are you also a medical doctor?
