School Grades - Good, Medium, or Bad?

I didn't do so well in elementary, middle, or high school. My grades were kind of a mixture of good and bad, depending on what the subject was. I did great in English and Art and Physical Education, but I did pretty terribly at math, history, and science -- especially math! I remember staring out the window in 6th grade and daydreaming about all sorts of things while my teacher, Mr. Meyers, droned on and on about algebra. I paid the price for that, though, in that I then couldn't understand higher math like trigonometry, calculus, and geometry. That being said, what kinds of grades did you get in school? Were you better in some subjects than others? How did you feel about school over all? Image by Stefan Schweihofer from Pixabay

I was a bit of an anomaly in that I did not excel in school, but still excelled in my grades. Go figure. lol. In fact, most of my high school years I skipped school, still averaged a 4.0, AND graduated a semester early.

You must be one of those extra-smart people! My husband is that way, too. He catches onto everything very quickly. How did he end up with me, LOL!?!

@gtdoss lol. I don't know if I am smart. I just had the knack for retaining what I needed to know in the short term and erasing it after I did not need to know it anymore. lol

I got good notes in most subject except sports, all the way through my third year in university. Then I had to start doing more, and it took a year before I figure out how much and my grade went up again. And as a former math teacher I do know that it's actually possible to teach algebra in a more interesting way than many do. Also there's plenty of research on how (or maybe mainly how not to) make the change from only numbers to letters. I can't remember that I ever wondered about that, but we had a good math teacher in secondary school.

@gtdoss Not wonderful, more inventive, since I get easily bored myself. Teaching teacher students now. Hopefully I'll get them to understand that they need to have fun themselves teaching, at least every now and then. 'Cause if you don't have any fun, it'll be difficult to teach the kids that learning new stuff is fun.

Yes, it's amazing how much an interesting and inspiring teacher makes! Some people just shouldn't be in the teaching profession. Sounds like you were a wonderful teacher!

Yes, I was better in some subjects. Not very good in math, better in algebra, not very good in Latin.

@gtdoss Latin was mandatory in Italy when I was young and I was a student. No more now.

We didn't have Latin studies in any of my schools. My sons, though, did take Latin, and they did not like it!

I think a lot of people experienced this. It may be because elementary school can be kind of fun, whereas high school can be kind of boring.

I was good at my studies. I was among the toppers in the class. I was good, especially in Maths and Science. I never liked history and geography, they were so boring. Overall I used to get above 80% throughout my school time. In those days scoring 80% was difficult unlike these days.

Awesome! I used to hate history and geography as well in my younger days. Now I find them fascinating. I think a lot of it has to do with teachers and how interesting and inspiring they are, or not.

Oh, A minuses are still very good! I'm glad you actually enjoyed school. Until my senior year, school seemed like a prison to me, LOL!

@gtdoss Oh, yeah, there are a lot of people who feel like you do about school. I still read books all the time and watch science videos online.

I got super good grades except in PE and art, where I got Cs. I was sure not talented in those areas. I didn't like math either, but I was able to keep working. I dropped math as soon as I had all the required math.

PE and art were really the only places I exceled, also English. Everything else was either too complicated for me (math) or too boring for me (history).

I didn't do so well in primary school. In high school, I was doing pretty well in all subjects except physics.
