Biggest mess yet that I came home too

Yesterday was international geocaching day. I planned to go out and get 6 geocaches to hit 1300 finds.
I was sitting in a cemetery where poor people were buried whom literally had nothing to their name and were buried without a headstone.
I took a photo of me with my 1300th find then received a photo from my husband saying I may need to dust a little tonight. The photo you see here is the wall this morning after things were cleaned up for the most part.
He was supposed to just put in a new front door so the new fridge could be brought in on Tuesday but he also ripped off the paneling, tore down the wallpaper and lathe and plaster and made the biggest mess you can imagine.
I knew from when he did the bathroom that he still hasn’t finished after 4 months that the house would be in bad shape when I got home. So after that big smile in my selfie I started crying.
I decided I didn’t want to go home yet and deal with it so I just continued geocaching until the baby hit her milestone of going on 100 geocaches with me.
When I got home the door still wasn’t done. My father was here helping.
Every surface you can imagine was covered in dust from the lathe and plaster. He never shut the closet or cabinets or covered up anything so every single thing in the living room, dining room, bathroom, kitchen, hallway/stairs and large walk in closet is covered! I cried so hard knowing it will take me so long to clean this up and how little time I have due to the baby.
Since they are putting in new windows today (which wasn’t planned ahead of time either) and trim work and drywall I have to leave the house again with the baby for the day so they can work.

@Orson_Kart Haha - well, in this case, it was a MAN who pulled off the siding etc and DIDN'T THINK!
Just telling it like it is. And, by the way, did you know that when God made Adam, She was only practising?

OMG ...my heart went out to you....cleaning home that is left for long....I did that last couple of weeks, and I know how tough it is. I feel truly sorry for you. In your condition, that is tough. So sorry...hugs...tell you what...do little everyday...and be organized. Kinda, everything seems to be screaming me first, when are you going to clean me. But I chose to tell things...shut up, I am starting from that room, after that this room then you.

@vandana7 that is no fun to had to clean a house that had sat to long. Dust and cobwebs would be terrible. That isn’t the case here though it’s far worse. He tore the walls out and lathe and plaster dust is on every surface you can imagine. He never shut the cupboards or closets or anything so our large walk in closet has to have every single item washed. I already do far to much laundry a day as it is.
I have cleaned what the baby and I will touch otherwise it’s left the way it is because he is going to tear out another way then put drywall and sparkle up then want it. It will be such a mess no point keeping cleaning it up now to just do it over and over again.

A little dusting?? He started worrying about your reaction a bit too late. The door is nice though. Next time he wants to do something though..make sure you help him cover things in advance and set up properly for it, so you don't have this situation in the future.

@snowy22315 I left the house expecting a slightly larger hole cut out for the bigger door and that’s it. New windows and gutting the walls was not part of the plan. He was hurrying me to leave to he could get started on the door. Had I known he was going to do all this I’d have covered everything I could, hung up sheets to block off the rooms, shut the closet and cupboards etc.

@shaggin He's a devil with a saw in his hands I guess. There are lots it seems that like to take things apart, but are not great at putting the back together.

@snowy22315 he starts projects then starts another before finishing the first. My cupboard fell and broke and instead of fixing it so I could put the food back in it he didn’t this. Now the boxes of food is covered with lathe and plaster dust.

Preparation is the most important part of any job. He didn’t prepare properly but as you are cleaning it up, it doesn’t really matter to him.

@Orson_Kart if my son didn’t have to go back to school I would have packed stuff for him, the baby and I and gone and stayed at a lake house a few hours away until he paid someone to clean it all up after he was done.

@rebelann his version of clean and mine are two very very different things. If I left it up to him to clean it up I still wouldn’t want to be living here. If it was the beginning of summer he did this I wouldn’t have stayed here until it was done and cleaned but my sons back in school now.

@LadyDuck he hasn’t been able to even get the drywall yet due to it being so rainy. He’s going to gut another wall tomorrow so I’ll be out with the baby for the day. He plans to put up plastic this time. I don’t know why he didn’t before

@LadyDuck he has a little insulation up now hoping to do some drywall tomorrow. He’s being stubborn and saying he wants to do the living room this winter. Winter is a horrible time to do this. I’ll be stuck inside and not able to go out anywhere with the baby. Christmas is so expensive too. I’m getting tired and the thought of all this is making me feel like crying so I’ll go shower and go to bed.

@Tina30219 I’m just hoping he realizes it’s a bad idea. I’m worried as much as he’s spending on all this we will go broke

Reading this, I am more than a little annoyed for you Shanny
I think he is inconsiderate and to tell you the truth, he made the mess, he should have cleaned it.
Not you.
Great for you and the little one for the geochacing
Does it smell weird in the house now with all the walls open like that? my God

@RebeccasFarm he didn’t mention until two days ago why he did it. He said the wall was crumbling so bad when he took the paneling off that he had to gut. Okay well he should have stopped and covered things up and closed the closets and cupboards etc. Yes there is a yucky smell now.

That's great that you found 1300 geocaches. And even better that you choose to stay out and keep on catching them even after the news about dusting.
I think that I would lay down the law and tell him that he must have a conversation with you with his plans, you are all in that home together and nobody can do all of the work, you and he included.
The door looks lovely, the rest will look great too I hope.

@Juliaacv I was really angry tonight and of course when I get mad about something he just tells me he doesn’t want to hear it yet when he’s mad we all have to deal with his yelling.
He’s very inconsiderate. He doesn’t do any of the cleaning so he doesn’t know how much work it is. I told him it took months to clean up all the bathroom remodeling (because he worked on it so slowly and it’s hard with the baby to get time to clean like I needed to.) and he told me I was being dramatic. Nope he started the bathroom March 10 and it’s still not done and I just got the last box of stuff washed and put away last week. Now all that stuff is once again covered with stuff I’ll have to clean off of it.

@Tampa_girl7 thank you. I’m hoping it will match well with the dark gray siding we will be putting on.

@sallypup there is only a small path through the room to walk though and I have to have a gate in the kitchen doorway and another in the living room doorway to block the baby out of the dining room as there’s so much she could get into. I can’t wait until this is all done if it ever is. We are doing my daughters birthday party this weekend and it’s supposed to rain. There’s no way to move the party inside so we will have to plan around what times it’s supposed to rain and hope it’ll be nicer out then the weather shows.

@DianneN my dad sucked up around the edges with a shopvac. This kind of mess could ruin the motor on a vacuum cleaner. It leaves almost a sticky powder it’s hard to explain but it’s awful. They are gutting another wall tomorrow but he’s supposed to tape off the work area with plastic and I moved everything fragile in the area he will be working. His son rushes too much and breaks everything he touches so I’m really worried he will wind up breaking my China cabinet or a window or something.
It’s hard to see the design in the center of the glass on the door. I’ll have to take another photo of that.

@DianneN oh gosh they should have blocked off the vents as well. My husband didn’t so that either so the dust traveled
. I cleaned what the baby and I will touch but the rest I have left there knowing they will make a huge mess again when sanding the drywall spackel once that’s ready.
My husband won’t let me pick out the paint or anything I’m so irritated. It’s the main point of our home and the first thing people see when they walk in and it’s going to look horrible with his tastes.

@shaggin I imagine how icky that powder is. When we had our kitchen gutted, the living room, dining room and the floors sanded, they put up plastic covers, but that dust seeped all over the house through the vents and into all the bedrooms and bathrooms!!! You can’t do much of anything until all the work is done. Otherwise, you will kill yourself dusting and washing every day. Just imagine how pretty everything will look when the work is done
