Just came across this photo of Mykey, he was the first male, neutered of course, dog I had. He was very protective of me and his playmate Sophie. I didn't know to socialize him because with my other pups, all female, I didn't have issues with them threatening people but this boy was determined to protect me from everyone.
He accepted the neighbor and even kinda liked him and he tolerated his dogs but wasn't overly friendly.
Luckily he never bit anyone but boy did he scare them. He weighed about 70 pounds in this shot. He was a GermanShepherd/American Bull Terrier mix and because he had Sophie and I was working I didn't know to socialize him.
I miss him.
Now I have Roscoe, he's so opposite from Mykey. He's friendly because I finally learned that I needed to socialize him but I think if anyone tried to hurt me he'd give them what for.
Roscoe is also very destructive, I'd never had a dog that destroyed everything. Not fun let me tell you.
I think this video will make you laugh or maybe make you remember your own naughty pups.

Beautiful dog! My little dog didn’t get socialized enough when she was little and has a lot been in fear of people. She’s better since the baby was born which is odd. I think she just needs the attention I can’t give her now with how busy the baby keeps me.

What an interesting mix Mykey was - beautiful! The dogs I grew up with were not "socialized". They were family dogs for sure and just not into anyone else - most apparent in the biggest one. Is Roscoe getting less destructive though? The biggest dog just ultimately calmed down as he got older - except for the parts where he could use his hunting instincts . Oh those guilty looks - too funny - and how could anyone stay mad at those faces .

@rebelann If we should ever get a dog, I will remember that now too. That was just the way long ago I think . . . parents didn't even do that with their kids (I am an example of that ).
Interesting Roscoe isn't trying to get under the fence anymore . . . maybe he's decided it's too much work . I'm glad he's getting over that - I know it was a lot of work for you to patch those areas up .

Yes, he was a beauty.
Your family pups make sense, when I was growing up it was the same way, no one thought of socializing.
Thankfully Carol finally met Mykey when he was about 8 years old and set in his ways then mentioned I should socialize him.
When I got Roscoe I remembered what Carol said and made it a point to keep him socialized especially towards other dogs.
Oh, Roscoe will probably never actually grow out of his destructive ways but now he's not trying to get under the fence as much. That's at least 1 step in the right direction.

Thank you. At least he lived 12 years and was well loved.
He was so funny sometimes.

That's a great picture of Mykey all comfy in your chair. It's funny how dogs have such different personalities. I love hearing about Roscoe and his antics but I don't know if I'd want to have to deal with all that energy

Roscoe is almost 18 months old so he's still got a couple years of energetic spaze to get rid of.

@rebelann he older he gets the better he'll be. I see that with my oldest daughters black lab. He had boundless energy when he was a pup but he's starting to calm down now (he's about 3 or 4)

She's a lab mix so she'll be in puppy mode about 3 years before she's finally ready to calm down.
I got Roscoe a halter with a front and top clip for a leash plus a strap on the back so that if I need to I can grab the handle to get a topside fix on him. The first time I grabbed it he fought me but he hurt himself doing that and now he doesn't fight me anymore. Have you seen the halters they make for them?

Well, I like the one I have, it has a leash loop at the front of it and one on his back just behind the strap which is nice. Roscoe needs to learn manners and this is the only way I could think of to get him to co operate ...... he's one really strong pup

@rebelann I didn't need to hear that about Labs!! But it was kind of that way with dearest Leah. I don't use dog halters. Foster Dad taught Rufus leash manners and I am slowly teaching Annie leash manners. Both of them know- most of the time-to never bump into me. And for sure do not walk in front of me when we walk together.

I think those American bull terriers can be formidable if you don't socialize them, I wish I had known that before he got to be the way he was.

Mykey was loyal dog and friend to you. How's Roscoe, you new dog in the house? How did you get him? Interesting.
Watched the Guilty Dogs compilation video. They have conscience, too! Amazing to watch them

Yes he was thank you.
Roscoe is wonderful, he is still a puppy in many ways but is showing signs that he is becoming mature. I adopted him via the humane society.
Yes, it is so funny when a dog shows how guilty he or she is for something

What a lovely dog. I love any stories about dogs. I didn't realize that Roscoe was a destroyer! So sorry about that. I love videos about guilty dogs. They are so expressive!!

Mykey was so gosh-darned cute! Thank you for sharing this picture of him and also the YouTube video. I would love to have a dog, but I'm too lazy to give a dog the walks they need, and I also don't have property where a dog could roam freely.

I get that. I made a good purchase back in 1997, I bought a half acre then put a field fence around it and that's where Roscoe gets to roam. He runs the fence with the neighbor dogs which is his exercise.
I don't think I'd be up to walking him in all the heat we get plus it would be hard on his paws if I walked him on that hot asphalt in summer.
