Winter Is Coming, I'm Not Ready Yet

Today it was a lot cooler than it has been. Tonight, down in the 50's. The pleasant, cooler weather today made me think of winter, and the things I usually do to get ready for it. I decided to go through my drawers of sweaters, heavy fleece shirts, flannels, warm whatevers, to see what's what. So, after several strong, bracing cups of hot, black coffee, I started in on this project. I took all the stuff out of the drawers they were stored in and put them on my bed. I shook them all out and looked at them with a critical eye--not for style, because I stick to basics, but for wear and for size.
I did a great job purging out the winter stuff last year, so there was nothing worn out. However, I started trying on and such and realized I have almost no winter shirts at all that still fit. For the most part they are so big I think I could hide a small child or a Thanksgiving turkey under most of them, after I put it on. Is this a good thing? Well, yes. But no matter what, some cannot be altered and would not look right if they were. I boxed up all the ones that are just way too big. They will get donated tomorrow. The cardigans were fine still, and a few knit types of tops still fit as they have a close fit normally. But all the rest, the really warm stuff, is going to go to someone who needs it.
Back to the thrift store I find bargains in (which is the one I donate to, also). I can get new or nearly new things there for literally just a song. Shirts are $1, Jeans either $1 or $2. Jackets, hoodies, and coats are $2 also. I will start going in about once a week or so to see what they have so I will be ready for cold weather.
Are you ready for winter yet?

Nope... our lows are still mid-60s. It's not close enough to winter for me to worry about it yet.

Because I really love Fall, it always seems like when winter does arrive, it rushes in. When the cold hits, I'm glad to know I am ready for it. And this year, it's more than just looking at the same old stuff, because not hardly anything fits anymore!

@MarieCoyle I've lost weight since last winter but not enough to buy new clothes.

Well, I am not really buying new clothes, I'm into the thrift type of clothes. I often find new, and always find brands of clothing I could not afford to pay new prices for.
Good job on losing weight, I know it can be very hard.

I'm not ready for winter. Heck, summer is not even done yet! I need to go through my clothes and see what I will need for when cold weather does hit. I have not had the best of luck in finding winters clothes at the 3 Goodwill stores here in town. Summer shirts, though, have been pretty decent.

The Sisters Of Providence from St. Mary Of The Woods Colllege have a little thrift shop in the little town just across the river from here. They put the money back into the community to help people less fortunate.

I would rather support the small ones that really do put the money in the community, than Goodwill, if at all possible.

There are 4 Goodwill stores within easy driving distance. Only one of them is a good place, the others are not kept up at all and not pleasant to go to. I mostly support the one thrift store close to me that prices things very low, and donate my clothing I can't wear to them, as I know they help a lot of people who can't pay.

@MarieCoyle That is a good rule to have.

I kind of have a rule, if I don't wear it in a year's time, it has to go. I only make exceptions for very special items. No sense keeping them if I don't wear them.

I used to keep stuff forever, even worn out stuff, don't ask me why. I got over that, others should be wearing the clothing if I cannot.

@MarieCoyle Tomorrow we should receive the flyer from the government. At least we will know what are the restrictions this year because of the Russia/Ukraine problem. I know already we will not be allowed to keep a temperature higher than 66 F inside our homes. I am fine, but this is surely a problem for my husband

Last winter I kept my home cooler than I really wanted it to be. Our power rates just climb and climb. I wear long sleeves and a sweater in the house, too.

Yes, I fear that winter could be very hard on some who are not frugal. I do the best I can to be so, but everything is so costly everywhere right now.

Yes, I am most definitely ready for winter. My clothes work for me all year long here in Georgia, USA, so I don't really have to cull clothing unless it wears out, etc. That might feel great, though, to pack up clothes that are too big for you to give away!

Terri, you have no idea how good it feels for me to do this. So many tries and fails. Thank you.

@MarieCoyle I agree with you. And I am a magnet for the bugs. I enjoy the screen room in the fall.

If there is a bug that bites people, it shows up to try to bite me. I would love a screen room, that would be lovely.

August is my least favorite month of the year. So, so hot. Muggy, humid and if I try to sit outside, a ton of bugs show up to keep me company. I honestly think I could get through August a lot easier without all of the bugs!

Nope with the temp hovering close to 90 degrees most of the week, it isn't really on my radar. Actually, I just checked one of the forecasts says we will stay in the mid 80's. That sounds much better!

Nice to shop in that thrift store. There's no winter in Philippines only dry and rainy but mostly dry that's why, it's super hot here at the extreme.

I know, right? They go on only donations, and many people donate their stuff there as they know this place helps others. I recently bought my son 2 Nike hoodies and a Northface one, too. All very nice, no stains or rips and I couldn't even tell they had been worn. Total of $6, they are all washed up and he took them home. He likes hoodies unless the temperature is really cold, he's always hot. So I bargain shop for him, he pays me back.

Noooo. Not yet! I'm still adjusting to the beginning of cooler mornings and evenings which usually signal the end of the hot summer days. I've already noticed an earlier sunset almost an hour earlier than just a couple weeks ago, so the switch from t-shirts and shorts in the evenings has begun. Definitely, a lot more apparel choices to be worn come winter. Looks like your off to a good start, but let's get through Autumn first, lol.

Well, that's true enough. And I have seen years when we pretty much bypass spring and go straight in to boiling hot weather, too.
