I have a trauma from childhood that I feel until now, when I was 6 years old my brother's friend pushed me into the sea he thought I could swim even though I couldn't swim at that time. When I was in the sea I felt suffocated, my ears buzzed and when I opened my eyes, I saw a strange seabed that was dark and empty. Until now I was afraid to open my eyes while in the water.

I had a brother that was HORRIBLE!!! I was beaten, he tried to drown me, he burned my feet and hands...the story of the abuse goes on and on. I had a horrible time with taking swimming in gym class, especially when it came to jumping off the diving board. I nearly flunked gym because of my terror of the water. I was 5 when he tried to drown me in the swimming pool at the place we lived. Fortunately, a wonderful lady socked him a good one and got me away from him. I was out of the pool in a flash and raced for home at lightning speed. I'm not good about opening my eyes in the water too. I use swim goggles when I'm in the water, that and a nose plug helped me get through 6 years of gym class with a passing grade in swimming.

@sharon6345 Both my parents worked. If I had told them about his abuse, he would have beaten me worse the next day. I discovered that rather quickly and learned to keep my mouth shut about what he did to me. I also learned that I was his personal "slave" and had to do everything he demanded of me, or else I would be beaten with a belt or whatever he got his hands on. The best thing he ever did for me was run away from home at the age of 16. He ended up in New Orleans as a worker on a tugboat, and he worked his way up to captain. I always felt sorry for the people who worked with him, or he bossed around. He had NO compassion or feelings for others, and that had to carry over to the job. I haven't seen him in 40+ years and don't care if I ever see him again. The last I heard he was living in Florida...providing he is still alive.

Did your parents not notice anything amiss? Parents should pay attention to their children, especially little girls. When we were little, my mother watched me and my two sisters like a hawk.

I can't swim, but I don't have any real fear of it. But I do have a fear of dogs. A big dog jumped on me when I was little so I am scared of dogs.

Yes naturally you would be fearful still. Is it just the sea water you are afraid or all swimming water? I have had multiple traumas through out life, I do not like to speak of.
