I suppose I'm too big now to have a rocking-horse

The people we are house-sitting for are a blended family. I think that is the right term. They are our age and have adult children. The husband has three daughters and the wife has at least a son and a daughter, and there are quite a lot of grandchildren who, judging by the books and toys in some of the rooms, have a great time when visiting their grandparents. This lovely rocking-horse caught my eye. I had a wonderful rocking-horse when I was a child and spent many happy hours on it. I love the colours of this one and it’s covered in a sort of plush fabric. Were you lucky enough to have a rocking-horse when you were a child?

This is a very nice rocking-horse. I don't have a rocking-horse when I was a child. I had sat on a rocking horse in a park.

I loved my rocking horse and spent a lot of time 'riding' it.

No rocking horse in my childhood. I just galloped around the house on an invisible horse.

I had lengths of bamboo which were my horses and a shorter piece as a whip!

I am not sure whether I had this in my childhood, but I bought such one for my son. Unfortunately he didn't like it very much and then we gave it to my friend.

@JudyEv This is a very precious photo If I had one more child, perhaps my son would like the rocking-horse as he got someone to play with it

Oh, that's a shame that he didn't like it. Here is mine and that's me on it with my brother standing behind.

I do not think so, I have seen the photo of a good friend of my brother riding a huge rocking horse. He loves horses, he won many races in Italy.

It was probably a fashionable toy a while back but maybe not so much now.

@JudyEv No more in our days, but back in times almost all kids had a small horse toy.

Have you sat on the rocking horse and tried him out? No, we didn't have rocking horses when I was little and I never bought one for Pretty. Dad cut up broom sticks for us and added reins at one end so we could "ride" while galloping our horse around the yards. Pretty was more interested in cars and motorcycles, so I bought her electric ride on toys.

Not everyone wants a rocking horse, I guess. There were/are some great toy cars for kids nowadays.

@judyev You’re never to old for a rocking horse. Too big perhaps, but never too old. Go on, get up on it when Vince isn’t looking.

Kool rocking horse, if they make a larger one then you could ride it, right? I never had one and until my nephew was born hadn't seen one.

Judy, you are never too old to have a rocking horse! I had one when I was a child, and I remember all my cousins having them as well. I also had one for my two children when they were small.

@JudyEv You would think something like a rocking horse would stay fashionable throughout the generations. What child wouldn’t want to imagine themselves galloping around on a horse?

Aww, thank you, Jeff. I guess rocking horses have just about had their time in the sun. Even toys go in and out of fashion.

I did have a rocking horse but it was a sort of cut-out wooden one which my Dad made so nowhere near as realistic as that one. Also I like that type as they stay in place and there's no chance of accidentally rocking over someone's toes!

I put a photo of mine in a comment. I would swing it hard and bounce it along the floor. Mostly it stayed out on the verandah.

I was lucky enough to have a rocking horse as a child. Lots of fun riding it with my Davy Crockett cap on, lol. Toys have come a long way from the early hobby horse consisting of a stick with a fake horse's head on it

I didn't have a personal one during childhood nor did I buy it for my daughters. I enjoyed it a lot in our school play area where we had a few of them. And there was a huge demand for it . My daughters also have enjoyed it in the public parks.

I had a big rocking horse that was on springs on a stand when I was a child. our daughter-in-law and I were talking about it a couple of days ago. Someone made a wooden rocking horse for their children, just like the one that we had handmade for our son when he was a little guy.

@JudyEv My hubby had the pattern and the tools, but he did the same, and no longer has his tools either. Its time for the next generation to take up the patterns and tools and put their spin on making these things.

In my day, rocking horses were on a few wish lists. And I've always loved and been connected with horses but other than that, there is no special significance.
