While I’m doing this countdown to fulfill a request from Scar’s Hoomin I’m unintentionally doing something else, probably: shocking the daylights out of a lot of you. I’m looking at some well-known songs that were never either released as a single; or, if they were, didn’t make the top 40, and are still very popular as if the’d been a #1 hit. And will you look at this one!
#7: Here Comes the Sun - The Beatles
If I do another series (or two or three) of this theme there’ll probably be a Beatles song on every list. Given their legendary status it’s safe to say that “everybody” knows a Beatles song.
In this case, we’re talking about a truly iconic Beatles song, one of George Harrison’s best compositions in the band that Paul McCartney was in before Wings. From Richie Havens’ cover to that great SNL gag when Eric Idle hosted and kept trying to sing it to the unofficial song of the first day of spring (“little darling, it’s been a long, cold, lonely winter”), “Here Comes the Sun” is simply ingrained in music.
And to think it was NOT a single.
Seriously. All that knowledge you have of the song came either from owning Abbey Road or hearing it on FM rock all the time.
But aren’t you glad we do know it!
Here Comes the Sun
Written by George Harrison
Recorded by The Beatles
From Abbey Road, 1969
Billboard peak chart position: not released as a single
I feel that ice is slowly melting:

A lot of people do. That’s why it may shock a few to see it was never a “hit.”

Inspired by a true story (someone broke in Paul’s house, coming in through the bathroom window)!

Off the top of my head I know he wrote “Octopus’s Garden” and “Don’t Pass Me By.” He also wrote songs in his solo career, mostly “It Don’t Come Easy.”

I’m one of those few people who think Abbey Road wasn’t nearly as great an album as people claim it was (there are two TOTAL clunkers on the album for me), but the songs that are good are FANTASTIC. And this is one of them.

We might sing it at different times of the year (your winter is ending, mine will be here in three months), but we WILL sing it…because it is a great song.

It’s definitely one of the defining songs of the Beatles’ career, if you ask me.
