Introducing our friend, Nala

Twice a week at our house-sit we walk our friends’ daughter’s 14-month Labrador, Nala. The daughter lives just down the hill and only works a few days a week. We take a bag of treats with us and stay away from the sheep but otherwise Nala is very good. She loves the puddles and dams. The cows totally ignore her. However, today while we were out, we disturbed a kangaroo and Nala took off after it. We were a bit concerned that she might disappear over the hill and far away chasing the ‘roo but I guess it left her for dead as within a few minutes, we could see her up ahead and she came back to us easily enough. She’ll be having a sleep-over here on Thursday as it will be school holidays and her family is going away. We leave the next morning but our friends will arrive home later that day so Nala won’t be on her own too long. One interesting fact is that, In the three weeks we’ve been here, we’ve never heard her bark which seems a bit odd.

Labradors are such a lovely colour. A friend has a chocolate one but the cream is nice too.

@wolfgirl569 I've only met one that was a bit 'off' but she was inbred.

Sounds like you're having a great time at your house-sit and adding Nala to the mix is even more fun. She's a pretty dog but weird that you've never heard her bark. Glad she didn't go too far chasing the kangaroo

@JudyEv my daughter has a black lab and he's so lovable. Having treats is a very good idea

I have a bag of treats and give her one when she comes back to me but she hasn't been any trouble at all.

Looks like she is a bit shy dog and does not want to make noise and just likes to chase anything she can. She looks adorable and I think likes to seek attention too.

She is a very lovely dog and she does like attention. It's strange she doesn't bark but good in a way. I don't like dogs that yap all the tiime.

I wonder if the kangaroos are much faster then a dog. I’m sure those back feet of a kangaroo could do a lot of damage if the dog did manage to catch it. That is odd she’s never barked. Usually labs are very vocal.

A kangaroo would outpace a Labrador but not perhaps a greyhound. If she had caught it, she could have been in a lot of trouble. As you say, those back feet can inflict a lot of damage.

Best to ask Nala's fur parents about her not barking. Otherwise, she sounds like a good girl.

Our old neighbour had a Labrador but it had a very iffy temperament. Mostly, they are incredibly lovely dogs.

What a good looking dog. We had a lab, she was on the smaller side, her name was also Nayla, but we spelt it differently. Her full name was Princess Nayla Marie and then our last name-just a bit of a diva dog. She filed that role well.

@JudyEv She wasn't well bred, she was just a lab mut really. But she had beautiful eyes, and they could be so demanding.

That's a very fancy name but I'm sure it suited her well. We sometimes talk about a horse or a dog being too well-bred to speak to us plebs.

Nala is cute, I am glad she is quiet, she is still young and they often love to play. I love dogs who do not bark, I think it's how they are groomed.

@JudyEv Golden retriever dogs bark a lot more than Labradors. The yapping of little dogs is a very annoying sound.

That is odd you haven't heard her bark. Labs are very playful. Good you could catch up and Nala didn't catch the roo. I saw a video of a guy getting his dog out of a headlock a roo had him in. He had to box him. Crazy.

@noni1959 They try to get a grip on you then bring the hind legs up and try to disembowel you. The males are sometimes up to 6' high and very strong.

An elderly man (my age ) was killed just a week or so ago by his male pet kangaroo. The males are not to be trusted.

Dogs are chasers, so glad the kangaroo got away or she'd still be chasing it! I have never heard my neighbour's dog bark. It is a Lurcher and I've been told that is a trait of the breed

Apparently it's a trait for Labradors too. Not barking I mean. I asked the owner this morning.

@Ronrybs That's true. And they have what is called 'soft' mouths so they carry a duck or game back to their owners without marking it.

@JudyEv I love the pcture of her and she looks very sweet. I thought she was a lab. I loe the name they gave her. I met another lab recently that was about Nala's color. She was very sweet but when I was leaving she did not want to say goodbye to me.

@JudyEv Mine was part lab and part husky and she was black and had some white. Her mother was a lab and her father a husky. I love those dogs and that is the only dog I would want these days if could have one but too hard to have one now. I have Sophie and she is my companion now.

@CarolDM And the bi*ches seem to have a strong maternal instinct. I've seen them looking after baby chicks, kittens, anything tiny that needs mothering.
