Jerseys and Guernseys - cows and books

As well as a Maremma dog and Anglo-Nubian goats, our veterinarian friend near Boat Harbour in Western Australia, also runs a small number of Jersey cows. Jersey and Guernsey cows are somewhat similar and come from the (English) Channel islands of the same names. The Jersey is relatively small and is a dairy breed with the milk having a high butterfat content. Dairy herds in Australia are mostly Friesian/Holstein but there is usually a smattering of Jerseys to improve the butterfat content of the milk. MyLotter YoghurtGal (@flapiz) worked on Guernsey Island for a while and wrote of her time there. And today I’ve just started a book called ‘The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society’ written by Mary Ann Sharrer & Annie Barrows. Isn’t it amazing that suddenly these same names are appearing? The photo shows Lotte (top) and Eland (bottom). Eland is enjoying the last of the day’s sunshine.

I loved the movie - so when you are finished reading the book - then you can add some of these delightful actors' faces to the characters. Star-studded and just a brilliant way of remembering the two variants of COWS and where they actually originated. Imagine their journey on a ship all the way to Australia and even SA as we have them too

I didn't know a movie was made of it.

I had an idea it was a movie but I haven't seen it. Jerseys and Guernseys have spread throughout the world now. I forgot to mention that they cope well with heat which is important for both your and my countries.

Lotte and Eland are both fine specimens of their breed. What is the book about?

I've only just started it but it's to do with the German occupation of Jersey during WWII.

Haha thank you for remembering me. It is a strange club isn't it. It is also on Netflix first thing I watched when I moved to Guernsey.

@JudyEv Truly I kinda want to read the book. The book is indeed based on the German occupation In Guernsey there is a bit of romance in there too.

Was it really? I'm keen to learn more about how Guernsey fared during the war. I'm presuming the book is all based on fact.

Yes I recall the Guernsey cows for the beautiful milk in England I had.

I'd love to go to those islands but it probably won't happen.

They were very quiet. Several came up for a scratch.

I love that book, read it a couple times, but I wish they'd explain just how you make pie from potato peels...

As I read it, the peel is only used for the topping. But I can't imagine how they did it either.

I never read that book but there was a movie they were reading that book or it was a movie itself by that title I can’t remember much about it. Dairy cows are very common around here. I usually see the ones in the bottom photo.

I love Jersey cows, they are so pretty and so gentle too. We used to often see one or two Jerseys in a herd of Friesians or Holsteins but since everyone got on the 'low-fat is best' train they have become much fewer.

We had mostly Friesians as house-cows but then we got a Jersey and her calf was like a little fawn compared to the walloping great Friesians. We called the calf Bambi.
