Accidental combinations

My gardening is a bit haphazard, basically I can never resist accumulating more plants and then have to find a space to squeeze them in wherever I can. And then every spring I (and often one of the girls as well) sow seeds of various annual flowers and then by the time they are ready to plant out they just get dotted about here and there wherever we can find a bit of space and any idea of a carefully-planned colour scheme soon goes to pot. In any case we often get seed of mixed colours so don’t know what colour the flowers will be until later. So it’s always a bit of a surprise, but now and then we end up with a particularly pleasing combination just by accident. I loved the rich colours of these two flowers together. The red are annual ‘snapdragons’ (Antirrhinum majus), but the yellow, although they look very similar, are actually from a short-lived perennial plant called ‘monkey flower’ (Mimulus guttatus) that I picked up at a local plant sale. So far it has grown back each year and is doing surprisingly well even though growing advice seems to say it needs constant moisture and it certainly hasn’t had that this year! It is a pleasing combination. Sometimes the so-called experts don't know what they're talking about. I've grown several plants in my area that aren't supposed to be able to live here. Two of them the "experts" insisted I couldn't grow them where I live. They've done just fine.

Plants are amazing really aren't they? The soil was so dry that I really can't imagine how plant roots could actually get any moisture out of it, even though I know the science of how it's supposed to work.

@Fleura Yes, they are. I partly buried red bricks around the roots of my pampas grass and it's loving it here. And the bamboo I grow isn't supposed to grow here, either. Bricks with the roots again to absorb the sun and keep the roots from freezing.

Thank you! Parts of it were a bit unexciting by the end of summer because it has been so dry. It is amazing that plants manage to survive at all!

"‘snapdragons’ (Antirrhinum majus)" Yeah, I guess you could say that dragons have big noses...

I believe the name refers to the shaps of the seed pods - although they look rather more like skulls which is even more creepy.

That cluster looks gorgeous. I do not think you should worry about colour combinations. Any combination in a garden should look good.

The flowering plants I have are in the front planter and I go for a mix of wild flower seeds. I just throw in a bunch of seeds and see what grows up. Interesting combinations here as well

That's just so nice to look at and the combinations is just nice. I thought they were of the same plant but different variety.

@fleura Very nice fleurs indeed. I prefer something a bit haphazard to strict control.

If you didn’t mention it, I would have thought it’s the same flower just different colors

My Mum was always poking plants in here and there, wherever she could find a spot for them. Your photo looks really lovely. Great colour scheme as you say. Best to tell people you planned it.

Apparently my grandmother was like that too. My Mum was rather more disciplined so it used to annoy her when I was growing up that I would be popping extra plants into her carefully tended rose beds

Beautiful flowers and those two colours go so well together. I let the mirabilis grow wild as I like the mix of colours, they start to bloom in May and are still blooming now.
