The start of this story takes us back to 1971 when the main character, a young woman named Rita, finds herself a new job as a Nanny to a wealthy London family. After working for them for a short time the family home is mysteriously burned down. This means that they have to relocate to a large family home in The Forest of Dean, taking Rita with them.
They are just settling into their new life in the country when something very strange happens. They find a tiny baby that has been abandoned on a tree trunk in the woods. Rita thinks that they should do the right thing and take the baby to the authorities, but the family have other ideas. They want to keep the baby and bring it up as their own because they think it would be cruel to have the baby put in care. However, Rita is worried about how the mother of the baby will be feeling if she decides that she has made a huge mistake.

I am nearly at the end now. It is one of those books that is hard to put down once I start to read.

@arunima25 I have now finished this book and there were several unexpected twists in the story that I did not expect. It was about a family that had many secrets like some families do.

I agree because in real life somebody would have reported it. However, at the end of the story, I found out how this really happened. This story takes place in an area where there are not many people around and the few local people who were involved all knew what was going on and they all agreed that this particular baby would have been better off with the wealthy family than being put in care or staying with the real mother. The real mother was very young and did not know she was pregnant until she gave birth. This meant that it was all very hush hush, and no authorities would have been involved at all.
There is also a twist in the story involving the nanny, a local man, the baby and another child

Thank you for sharing the start of the story, I guess the baby grows up and doesn't know his biological mother, until they meet. Then the background of the story becomes clear more and more, we get to know why the baby got abandoned in first place, who knows...
Can you please tell some more about the story ?
