Shifting spanner or crescent?

Yesterday we dropped off some artichokes to a family that we haven’t seen for over twenty years. When we first went to Donnybrook, we sold a little pony and cart to these people. There are a few stories to tell involving them but for the moment here is a photo of one of their horses. The daughter is now heavily involved in riding. The marking on the face reminds me of a crescent or perhaps you know it as a shifting spanner. Another example of how we have different terms for things.

Pretty horse. I am guessing but is a shifting spanner like the stick in a manual drive car? I don't drive an automatic which is why I ask.

@JudyEv Good description. Crescent wrenches are fun to play with.

A crescent and shifting spanner are one and the same. Do you know 'crescent'? It's an adjustable spanner that has a little wheel so you adjust the teeth to any size. It saves you having to have a lot of different size spanners.

That marking stands out against the brown colour. It looks like melted ice cream (lol)

A lot of horses have white stars/stripes/blazes. It's a good identifying feature.

@allknowing It is natural but each one is different. If your horse gets stolen it's good to know what identifying features it has.

Interesting markings, but spanners are not something I know much about!

So do you call it a wrench perhaps? Or do you mean you don't use tools much?

@Ronrybs Didn't you have to fix something under your sink? Or am I thinking of someone else?

I have used a crescent wrench many times but never heard of a spanner. Beautiful markings on this horse.

Another interesting difference in our use of language. We have a saying 'to throw a spanner in the works'. Maybe I'll write about it.

I’ve never heard of a shifting spanner. It sort of looks like a backwards question mark to me.

@judyev Back to front question mark? It’s quite striking. I wonder what the horse would make of it if it saw itself in the mirror? That opens up a new world of ponderation.

@JudyEv So long as it didn’t try any funny stuff with its reflection everything would be fine.

@xFiacre He was the other side of a fence so he was knickering to it. And it was knickering too of course.

My pony saw itself reflected in a big window once and was quite keen to get closer and make its acquaintance.

The folks weren't home but we'd been told to go to the stables to look at some photos. We'll go another day when they're home.
