I am not really sure what the advantages are to having a rice cooker. I mean I guess it makes it easier to make the quanity you want with the just the push of a button, but rice is something really pretty easy to make. I personally would never spend like 40-50 dollars on a device that does what I could do myself easily. I guess it is a time saver if you make alot of rice, but I really don't. I made some last night to go with my shrimp dish, but that doesn't happen alot. Rice maker or cooker, yay or nay?

I had one and promptly gave it away. It was given to me by the shop where I bought my freezer. The freezer took ages in coming and when I finally talked to the guy in the upper part of the ladder he promised that he´d send me a gift too. I looked at it when it arrived and quickly decided that my way of making rice was better. I like to fry the rice with crushed garlic. When my youngest daughter came to my house telling me that she needed to buy one to use as a slow cooker, I gave it immediatly.

I had one and it broke. I don't want one as I take very little rice that I can cook in a small vessel.

I am not a big rice eater either. I do have some cooked rice now leftover, I will probably eat some of it today with my shrimp dish.

@aninditasen I never make a small quantity like that. I make the standard quantity like that and eat it over a few days..

@snowy22315 I rarely cook extra rice. I cook little bit of rice and have it for lunch.

@snowy22315 I would never cook a risotto or normal Carolina rice in it, it's just good for steamed rice as I said.

@snowy22315 One of my brothers convinced little kid me that mom made rice by cooking maggots. I still can't get around that image. I will "give back" rice if I try to eat it.

Since the rice is a main food for us, so here every family will have a rice maker as it is the basic electric applians at home. Of course it is OK to make a rice without it, but it is much more convenient to use a rice maker since you don't have to pay attention to it. If you make it by a pan or something else, sometimes the rice bottom will be a little bit burned.

however, it seems that you make rice so much you should be expert at cooking it.

We don't have an electric rice cooker for a long time now. We just use the cooking pot for rice. I think we can live without it but if we have I think it is convenient too

We were given one but I only use it to make boil rice in milk for a rice pudding. Vince doesn't eat milk puddings so it's just an indulgence for me from time to time. I continually have to stir it as it sticks otherwise but perhaps that's why it was given away. There is no way I'd buy one just for savoury rice or whatever.

I studied in Case Western Reserve university in Ohio Cleveland USA. When I went from India to Cleveland I bought a rice cooker. The flight people broke it in transit. Thereafter I never used a rice cooker

I feel the same. Maybe you could sell yours online or use it for a wedding gift or something.

I too prefer cooking rice by myself. I don't like the use of machines to do things that I can do them better manually.

Yes, countries that make a lot of rice would no doubt find it a very useful item to have.

No rice cooker here. I've cooked all varieties of rice on the stove for my entire life and I don't recall any flops. It's such an easy dish to fix, and in all honesty the last thing I need is yet another appliance to take up kitchen counter space!

Yes, as long as you have the proper quantities of rice and water, it is pretty much a no brainer.

I have a rice cooker. Mine is multi-purpose. It can be used to cook rice, congee(rice porridge) soup and dumplings. It also has a basket for steaming dishes.

I would think where rice is more of a staple like in your country, rice cookers would be more useful.
