How do you eat a banana?

Bananas make such a convenient and tasty snack. They are easily portable, come with their own biodegradable wrapping, and nothing extra (like a knife) is required to open and eat one. Perhaps strangely, I thought that everyone ate them the same way, as shown in the picture. By peeling the skin part way down, then holding the still skin-covered end while taking bites from the top end. There must be thousands of photos of bananas like this. Even play food includes part-peeled bananas. Even pictures of monkeys eating bananas shows them holding them like this. So I was surprised recently when a friend with young children came to visit. When one wanted a snack, the dad took a banana, peeled it completely, then gave the child the whole peeled banana. Why would you do that? When a banana comes complete with a convenient and clean way to hold it while you eat, why would you remove that and have your child squish the inside in their sticky little hands and then no doubt get squashy banana smeared on everything afterwards? When I commented on this he was surprised and didn’t seem to know that there was any other way to eat a banana. Where has he been all his life?? I remembered this yesterday when another friend came over and she gave her small child a banana to eat in the ‘normal’ way. When I told her the above tale she was so agitated at the thought of anyone doing anything so odd that she spilled her tea! So how do you eat yours? Um, the normal way, of course. Unless it's on top of cereal or something.

That's what I thought was normal as well. I guess there's an exception to every rule!

I eat it like in the photo. Vince usually peels the whole thing. He's odd too - like @DaddyEvil!!

Maybe Vince and I are just more refined in how we eat bananas.

That is how I eat bananas. I eat bananas thrice a day May be the kid would have eaten the skin and therefore it was peeled completely

@Fleura That may be because your BP is normal and bananas brought it down. I take BP tablets and that with bananas perhaps it is normal. Not very high but it is good to keep it normal.

I don't think so, the skin is rather chewy! I used to eat three bananas a day too but my blood pressure became unusually low, so I thought perhaps it was that. I cut down on the bananas and things became normal again.

I tried to peel off with four flaps. Some people claimed that having three flaps while holding a banana is like a monkey's way of eating it.

Is that just because they naturally divide into three?

@Shavkat Well no, it sounds normal. The inside of a banana has three-way symmetry.

I peel the entire banana and hold it between thumb and forefinger to eat it. I promise, I don't make a mess while I eat it. I prefer my bananas more green than ripe so they're still quite solid when I eat them.

I eat my banana just as it is shown in the picture. I peel it partially and hold the unpeeled part while chomping on it!

I never touch the fruit itself, only the skin as you show here. I prefer and usually eat mine sliced in a dish, and I usually only eat half of a banana at a time.

@Fleura My favorite has to be strawberries. Although bananas would be my second choice.

I think bananas are my favourite fruit. At least they are the one I eat most often as a stand-alone snack, but I also like them in fruit salad, or with yogurt and honey, or in a sandwich with peanut butter... At one point I used to eat three per day, but then I found that my blood pressure was unusually low which I attributed to that! I cut down and things went back to normal.

Just like the photo, hold it and eat it. But if I want a sandwich I slice it, or add chocolate syrup for a treat.

I eat it like the one on the photo but somebody told. me that you have to peel it and put on a plate, slice and pick with a fork, at least it's not as messy as holding the peeled. banana with hands.

I have never seen anyone eat a banana with a knife and fork, but as you say that would keep your hands from getting sticky!

every morning I always eat, because it makes my stomach comfortable. I have a stomach ache, all I can eat is bananas. I'm more comfortable opening it like it's drawn, not by releasing everything.
