Kitty just fell asleep ON me for what may be the first time. Just how "intuitive" are cats?

I don't know if it's relevant that I was reading part of a book by the late Child Psychologist Judith Mishne and listening to classical music. Dr. Mishne, or Judy, as she was known to me, was the mother of one of my Chicago childhood best friends, Jon, and she also became a friend of mine later on her life. We would talk on the phone at least once a month, sometimes about psychology, and sometimes about other things. She actually assigned one of my published papers to her students in one of her counseling classes at New York University--a real honor for me. I was definitely in my "comfort zone" with classical music playing and Judy's book in my hands. Kitty, who had not slept in my bed with me for months, suddenly jumped up on my bed, came up to my pillow, and demanded a neck scratch. As I was returning to Judy's book, Kitty strolled down to just below my left hip, and put her head on my leg. She then put a paw on my leg and seemed to be asking if she could climb further onto my legs. I pushed her further up, and she inched still further forward, finally falling asleep with the front half of her body on my leg and her bottom still on the bed. I have always had a sense that Kitty wanted to sleep ON me, as cats sometimes do with their slaves, but this was the first time I can remember that she actually did so. How "intuitive" are cats? Could she tell that I was totally in my comfort zone, and therefore a Very Safe Place to be? I was reading a section about earlier theories of Autism, trying to gain insights that might help me with Keke, my Autistic buddy at the preschool, as well as my two Autistic piano students at Guitar Center. As some of you know, I am currently entertaining the hypothesis that music may be a way to break through the barrier that Autistic children put around themselves. What do you think? Cat Intuition? Or Mere Coincidence?

my opinion is your cat now feels like safe with you so your kitty feel asleep, i think...

She often seeps at my feet and doesn't budge when I get up to go to the kitchen or bathroom. She does trust me. But I think she's still not sure whether she's "allowed" to sleep entirely ON me.

I never had a cat around me. I have cat phobia and also I am allergic to them. So, can't say that with surety. But our fur babies are intuitive. And when it comes to music as therapy, I totally agree there. Music helps these autistic children.

Do you have some "stories" to tell abut music and autism? If so, pass them on to me! Daniel Levitin (a neuroscientist and musician) is currently writing a book about music as medicine. He says (someone in his lab wrote me back when I inquired) that there's little empirical research about the relationship between music and autism. He's looking for anecdotes/case histories at this point.

@arunima25 Interesting stories. I think music is a powerful and very "intuitive" language to learn.

@TheHorse Yes, it is. I have seen Music and art helping my own daughter and so many other kids. They are healing and therapeutic.

I think she loves the wet food I give her. I'll let her know it's OK to sleep totally ON me.. We'll see what happens.

My opinion is that the days are getting colder and kitty is getting closer to her human to stay warmer.

@LadyDuck Heh. We mammals are like that. Did kids used to sleep in bed with their parents in Europe in the old days?

The are intuitive. Mine knows when I'm getting ready to leave for a couple days. I won't be packed, and she knows. She will cling and bump my suitcase.

Kitty has also act "different" when she saw my patterns change before I headed up to Montana.

@TheHorse They are very smart even when act like they have no idea what you are doing or saying. I bet when I pull in tonight, Shelby Ann will be in the window meowing up a storm.

She is very sweet. She welcomed me home tonight and got a big neck scratch. Then she headed out into the night to do her cat stuff.

I am sure she feels comfortable with you now, so you are safe to her. She also may have just been cold. I have noticed Nico is a great deal friendlier when there is a chill in the air, and mommy has a warm lap.

Cats make their own choices depending on how they feel. My cats like to sleep on the bed with me, and other times they got off by themselves, and I have to wonder where they are and they all have their own personalities.

It could just be that she is now comfortable enough around you. But I'm sure she could tell that you were very relaxed and comfortable.

Listening to classical music is stress-free. It's relaxing. How often do you listen to it?

@TheHorse Not me. I do it occasionally. Last night before I went to sleep, I listen to my fave songs of 60s in Spotify app.
