During Chinese New Year, we eat certain foods which are believed to bring us luck in the new year. Chinese New Year foods include noodles for longevity, a whole steamed fish for abundance, a whole chicken representing family togetherness, New Year cakes symbolizing promoting to higher position and improvement in life.
Are there foods typically eaten on special days in your country, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, or other Festivals in your country?

@Beestring Hot cross buns at Easter, turkey at Christmas and for our family, we'd have brawn and tongue at Christmas too and fruit cake.

Actually, we also eat fish and chicken on ordinary days. New Year cakes sometimes are also available at some restaurants.

I will give you two examples. One for our Jewish New Year in order to have a sweet New Year we eat honey. For Hannuka we eat jelly donuts and potato pancakes. For Purim we eat Humantachins.

@Beestring We call it All Saint's Day and November 2 is All Soul's Day. We both visit the grave of our loved ones these two days in the Philippines. We erect and light candles on their graves.

We have nothing like that in our country. The only thing I know is good festivals whereby tribes celebrate and eat their indigenous foods

One day before the Bengali New Year we take fried food as a mark to bring balance in life. On 14th January we take sweet pancakes to bring in good harvest and abundance in food in every family.

All our traditional celebrations have traditional foods. Most of our festivals are harvest festival or our way of showing gratitude to the nature. We have dishes made from seasonal harvests. Each community and state has different new year day here in India. But in common, I have seen that they have a menu on new year day that has all the taste..sweet, bitter, salty, sour and spicy on the plate. It's said that the year ahead will be full of all emotions as the tastes on the plate.

We have traditional meals for special occasions and we have many more traditional meals that people prepare and enjoy that they enjoyed in their homeland before coming to Canada.
On Christmas Eve, we often go to our daughter-in-law's family's gathering where they have an authentic Polish meal which would have been served on that day. We have come to learn some of their other traditions also.
We have been guests at weddings where the families have different traditions during those celebrations also.
