A kitchen experiment

As I mentioned the other day, a productive garden often results in me trying out new foods or new ways of preparing things. I have masses of nasturtiums right now so I wondered if they could be used, and some Googling came up with a few suggestions. However I have to say that none of them were from any sources I had ever used before, but nevertheless I thought I would give some a try. My first experiment to report was nasturtium leaf soup. This was prepared with quite a large bunch of nasturtium leaves, along with a romaine lettuce, a small onion, a celery stick, stock and milk. The result was OK. It tasted a little bit like celery (more than would be expected from the one stick in there) and not spicy at all, but it also had a rather odd ‘gloopy’ sort of texture. I had a bowlful at dinner yesterday and will finish it off today. I have to say though that it isn’t making me want to rush out and cook any more. Maybe the conclusion is that I should stick to reliable sources for my recipes. Sometimes it isn't easy though when you have an unusual ingredient! I wondered about that... I've tried several recipes that someone on myLot thought was delicious and, after I tried it, wondered what had damaged their taste buds so severely.

@Fleura And did you offer to rush him to the doctor for testing?

@DaddyEvil Don't be silly, we can hardly get to see a doctor even for important things!

To be honest, I would have not even tried, I would have guessed that the leaves get a gloopy texture cooked.

@Fleura My husband often reads recipes online and when I have a look I tell him "forget about that", it cannot be good.

@LadyDuck Sometimes I wonder whether the people who write these things actually eat them, or just create them to get attention online.

I have heard of nasturtium flowers edible and I saw it as garnishing. However never heard of the soup. Does this act as detoxing soup? I use nasturtium plants to keep the insects off from main plants in my garden.

No idea about detoxing, I don't even really know what people mean when they say that!

This is the case of one man's food is another one's poison - some such thing - not actually poison though. Better stick to what we already know

@Fleura You were experimenting and so you choose to do it again if you really like it.

I like to try new things, and often they work out really well. I wasn't keen on this but my partner really like it!

Funnily enough my partner says he quite liked it, he polished off two bowls full today and yesterday! He also thought the flavour had improved with time. I can't say I noticed any difference.

At least you tried. I tend to stay with the recipes I am familiar with most of the time.

I like to try new things, but I do have a selection of recipe books I trust and also certain web sites.

Yes it was, and my partner actually quite liked it - and he said he thought it had improved by today as well! To me it tasted just the same.

I’ll have to look it up. I’ve never heard of them before.

I hadn't heard of eating the leaves before either, although I knew the flowers are edible, and the seed pods.

It's something to remember if supplies ever get low enough that you need to look locally for a meal.
