From little things big things grow - we hope

The photo shows the watermelon seedlings I bought yesterday. I really only wanted one so I don’t know what I’ll do with the rest. But can you see the little seed sticking to the top of a leaf in the foreground? When I bought the punnet, there were two seedlings which had seeds at the top of a leaf. I think it’s the seed from which the plant grew. I’m also thinking Fleur (@Fleura) would know if that’s right or not. Or maybe someone else knows.

Oh I love when they grow out of the seed and it’s on the end of it that way. I usually kill them not long after this

I've just planted out the pumpkin and three of the watermelon seedlings. I'll try to give the others away.

We don't really have room here for even one but these are all supposed to be okay for containers so I'm hoping they'll have enough room.

Yes, that's the "mother" seed. They usually fall off long before you see them in the store.

I know. And you see a whole paddock planted with wheat seeds or whatever and come the first rains and up they come. Small miracles indeed.

Those sprouts would need sufficient space to grow and bear fruit. Wow, that would be amazing, growing your own watermelon. I hope you'll get to reap big, juicy watermelons in the future. You could share the pictures with us too. That would be great. I don't know what they call those seedlings at the top of the leaf. Seedleaflets?

Good that you can grow watermelons. My daughter this year tried, but we had cucumber beetles that ate them right in the dirt. She handed up growing them indoors but didn't work out so well.

Yep, that's exactly what it is : ) Those two first leaves are the 'seed leaves' (cotyledons) that are actually present inside the seed, and grow up as the stem grows. Then after that come the 'true' leaves, that actually look you expect watermelon (or whatever other plant, as appropriate) to look like. You can see the first little true leaves just growing. Hope they do well!

@JudyEv We tried growing watermelon a couple of years ago, from seeds saved from one that we ate. They germinated OK and got off to a good start in the greenhouse, but then when I planted them outside the weather suddenly turned cooler and they just stopped growing. I tried covering the best-looking plant with a sheet of glass to try to give it some extra warmth, then the weather suddenly changed again to hot and the poor plant got cooked! So that was not a success. Hope yours do better.
