Customer Service is the pits!

Pretty and I were doing our shopping this evening and I realized I needed to buy a new pre-paid card for my cellphone. (The card isn't due until the 9th but why wait?) When I tried to add my card, the pre-paid site said the card wouldn't work with my phone... I've been using this company for 15 years and this phone for about 3 years. I KNOW this card works for my phone... So I called Customer Service. And got a younger-sounding lady with a very strong Latin American accent. All I could understand her saying was that she spoke English when I asked for someone who spoke English... I told her she might speak some version of English but it wasn't a version I could understand. I asked to be transferred to a Supervisor. I kept asking for someone who could speak English and she kept telling me "I speak GOOD English!" I finally hung up after ten minutes of banging my head against that wall. I will wait until the day shift there goes to work and see if someone can speak understandable English then. *sigh* Remember when Customer Service people actually spoke English? Total Wireless pre-paid card.

I like making you giggle, Sam. It is human nature to have and show emotions... I'd miss the real Sam if you stopped showing emotions to me.

@DevMrSamEleazar Yeah, the rude school mates are the perfect place to stop showing any emotions. Maybe they'll stop being a**holes to you if you stop responding emotionally to them.

Yeah, I kept repeating the words I could understand and telling her that was all I understood and then asked for someone who could speak English again... I wasn't being patient anymore a couple of minutes before I finally hung up. I was yelling at her that she didn't know English and then mimicking what she sounded like... She didn't like it and was getting upset with me but I still couldn't understand her.

She should be trained to handle someone who can't understand her bad English by passing that person on to someone who can speak English. I was told to pass anyone who couldn't understand me on to another person and let them try their luck. I was NOT told to keep saying the same thing over and over in hopes the person would give up and hang up the phone.

You know what sad thing is I would rather have that than AI, AI is pointless, give me a poor accent English speaking person so I can at least say can get someone that speaks where I understand and no knock on anyone. Its a hard world and everyone trying to get by but its makes it 20 times as hard if we cannot communicate properly. Again at least some places give you that chance now Paypal all ran by AI and no point in even trying to contact them.

@DaddyEvil Fair enough I cannot get into my Paypal account with out phone security code, send the code to my email, AI does not understand that. When I put in wrong email to get paid. I asked a person who probably had a bad English accent but was when they had their chat service and they told me simple, just add email to your account and you will get paid. You cannot even do that with Ai if its outside their parameters. I turned two notification system off sent me a email its off but they never turned it off. AI turned it back on. screw AI give me a reasonable hard to understand English speaking person any day. Also world not getting better, its getting worse. It has been since the 90's. 90's last era where people were actually fixing things.

I haven't had any problems getting help from the AIs that I've contacted. Even if they are deliberate and slower than a human being. At least I can understand them. (When I still worked at Walmart, most of the customer service people I talked with were in India and I became really good at figuring out what they were saying to me. Since customer service has expanded into Latin America, the accents really throw me for a loop.)

It happened to me once when I HAD to change the plane ticket we had bought . I carefully explained that I needed Sofías ticket at her mother´s side (she was then 3). I wrote it. The person said not to worry and sent me a ticket on the other side of the plane. I called back and explained that I I needed a ticket beside Claudia´s OR ELSE. The lady answered something in such a difficult to understand accent that sounded Indian that I did not undestand a word. THEN I GOT MAD! It was a lot of money and there was no time to lose. So I said: "Lady, English is NOT your native language and it is not mine either. Give the phone to a native English speaker or let me talk to someone who talks in Spanish." Finally, after a lot of problems, they gave me back the money I had paid and I could easily buy the tickets elsewhere. Now, with the call centers that answer to you from any part of the world, it is difficult to understand each other. Now many times when I have a problem with my TV (I pay each month to have service for that) someone from Venezuela, Colombia, Peru or Ecuador answers. I wonder if they are answering from Chile or that they got the job online at theitr countries.

@DaddyEvil It is less expensive to have an Indian IN India answer a call center. I´m not sure that the people who answer the TV repair center are in Chile. Although, here immigrants are usually paid less for the same job (as in very place in the world)

@DaddyEvil I was a supervisor for 5 years in a Telecom setting. I let my agents deescalate the call but not too much. If customer asked for supervisor after telling them that he is capable to handle the concern, I take over. I don't know if I still have the hard accent. They say that I have a neutral accent that most of the people I talked to over the phone can understand me clearly. Mostly US based customers.

@jobelbojel I was not a supervisor in Customer Service at Walmart but if someone was having a problem, they called for me to help them with the problem. Most of the time I could help the customer and get them into a good mood before they left the store. Do you have any YT videos up where you're talking in English?

I think CSRs are trained not to let someone talk to a supervisor anymore, as if that isn't the supervisors job when things aren't going well with a customer. I found out i could text with customer service over my laptop. It took the guy 15 minutes to fix the card for me and I didn't have to contend with any accent at all. It was nice! You should listen to Sam speaking English. He has a noticeable accent but I can understand him easily. I'm sure you have that type of accent, too. As long as I can understand, I'm fine.

Ugh. That's so frustrating . . . and I had a recent taste of that too. I had to call for service repair for my mom's landline . . . and even though I can normally decipher broken English, I just could not understand this lady. I had to ask her to repeat several times and it seemed like a huge waste of time - banging my head, yes, I had that feeling totally!! In the end, I gave up on her and said I'd try the online service instead . . . but that turned out to be another bust . . . had Hubby call it in and he got someone else that at least spoke decipherable English .

@DaddyEvil Are these kinds of CSR jobs being sourced out (out of country)? I couldn't even get past spelling out the name and account number . . . I had to repeat to her a zillion times too . I appreciate being able to speak to a real person, but not if we can't communicate properly. You just know if you call again, you're going to have to deal with that type of thing again . . . it's sad we just expect that now.

Yup! I usually don't even bother trying to talk to a CSR if I can't understand them but I wasn't thinking. I usually hang up and try again. I normally either get someone else speaking bad English or a different accent, at least. By the time I hung up with the lady last night I was angry and didn't want to try again.

@much2say Most CSR jobs not in a store like Walmart or Target are outsourced to India, the Philippines or Chile/Peru. There are a few companies that are bringing the jobs back to the US now. (I read that in Business Insider about a year ago.) You DO speak English, right? And I'm not always sure Californians are part of the US. Remember, I talk with you, pony and crossbones.
