Why do so many people want to be women?

I was just chatting to my Romanian friend; she was telling me that as a young woman growing up in Communist Romania, when she and her friends heard that in ‘the West’ surgery could make women into men and men into women, they couldn’t believe it. And they thought that if it was true, there must be no women left in the ‘West’ – because who would choose to be a woman? She and her friends could think of a long list of reasons why they might wish to be men, but why would anyone want to change into a woman on purpose? Fast forward a few years and here she is in the ‘West’ and it seems that more people than ever want to change gender and become women. Now it has become much easier and far more mainstream, and practically de rigeur in some circles it seems, and even asking why anyone would want to do that will probably get you branded a transphobe, so while it might be far more common, none of us are any the wiser as to why anyone would do this. A person might choose to become a man – better pay, more opportunities, less household drudgery, greater physical strength, more authority, more credibility, no problems associated with childbirth, no risk of the stagnation of career that so often ensues from having children, no harassment, less fear of assault, no-one criticising you if you have children or don’t have children, no-one scrutinising everything you wear every time you go to any function, less responsibility for looking after family etc. etc. – but why would anyone deliberately choose to become a woman? Can someone please explain?

@fleura It’s the wardrobe darling, getting to dress up in pretty frocks rather than just jeans and a tee shirt or a suit.

@xFiacre I concur. I have gone from dress size 14 down to 10 by following a strict diet one of my (girl) friends recommended

But this is what I don't understand, after all these years - decades even - of fighting for equality, I thought it was now quite acceptable for anyone to wear anything they wanted, so men can wear pretty dresses any time they want (and yes I know several who do) without needing to actually become women.

@xFiacre If you can't help but stare you could just go over and say 'I can't help but notice your striking outfit! Where do you get your amazing clothes?'

I don’t know, but if they had to put up with the monthly menstrual cycle they wouldn’t want to be women.

@FourWalls Yeah but women don't have to go through that daily ritual of scraping that annoying thick growth of beard from their faces

Most women are pampered and cared for - have you not heard of the cliched phrase - Ladies First? (lol)

I wouldn't be keen to have irreversible hormone treatment and surgery just to have someone open a door for me!

@Fleura I agree, women want to become men to have a better salary and a different life. They should evaluate carefully what they leave and what they get. If there is a war they will be called to the front...

Yes that too, and I completely understand that although I don't support it because life isn't that simple, in the end you just have to make the best of the hand that fate has dealt you.

Surely being male or female is more about the mindset than the 'simple' physical differences. I don't think some of those who wish to change really think through the consequences.

Maybe, I do wonder if some people have really thought it through, especially the younger ones.

It depends on the situation. Women in some countries like India, Pakistan and the Middle East still lead a dependent life which some men think as a blessing but I think it's a curse with no independence.

True but it seems to be the more 'westernised' countries that are seeing this latest trend. I doubt there are many trans women in Afghanistan.

@Fleura Yes, transgenders are there in every country and not only Afghanistan.
