Why Are We Really Here?

Do we do this thing for money? Yes, and no. I am pretty sure that if there was no money, most of us would not be here. I am sure that when this site was not a paying site for a duration, most people were not here, and would not be here. It is what it is. Time is money and time is as important as money. Sure. We are all friends of sorts here. Let's not discount that. Not for a minute. Many of us know each other from other places we met before even, and being who we are and what we do, we seek out places like this. myLot. Just like we did the places before it. Bubblews, HubPages, WebAnswers, Niume, Daily Two Cents, or whatever other place has ever existed as a "pay to associate" site. All of them paid us, and so long as they did, we stuck around. When they stopped? We jumped ship. At least most of us did. Friendship is great. Camaraderie is great. Participation is great. But without the monetary aspect? Well, it's just not worth it no matter what we say, which is always, "I will be here even if it does not pay." Actually, no. You won't be. And as so many sites before it that paid that suddenly didn't, when the money stopped, so did the people. I write this as read.cash loses Rusty, the Random Rewarder, as we called him. People are leaving in droves. It is not worth the time and effort without the money. According to them. I think the bottom line is this. We are here because we enjoy each other's company. No doubt about it. We are here because we like sharing our lives and enjoy each other's opinions about that. Yep. We are here because we have a place to interact and share and talk. Yeah, absolutely. We are here because even if this site is not really writing, it is at least a form of it, and we enjoy that. But we are also here because for doing any of these things, we get a small pittance in return for doing it. It is not life changing money. No one will get rich from it. No one will get ahead from doing it. We won't be the next name on the Forbes list for it. And we won't get an offer from the New York Times or Life Magazine either. We are here for fun and friendship and interaction as much as we are here for the small monetary reward we get in return for it. That is the reality. That's the truth. Does it pervert the cause? Does it pervert what we do here? No. Not at all. It is simply to affirm that if there was no money, we would not be here, but would seek out some other place to do what we do here. Just like we have always done. All of us who were at other places before they stopped paying. We never stuck around those places. What would suggest we would stick around here if suddenly the money stopped?

I'm not here for money. I don't get to spend a lot of time on here to even try. I just love reading about everyone's lives and what they share.

I say I'm not here for the money, and for the most part I can say I'm here for the same reason as you Loretta, but I'm not going to lie, I get really bummed out if I don't reach payout in any given month. I, too, don't have a lot of time to spend here, at least not as much as I used to. So the pennies roll in a lot slower for me than what I've been used to in the past. But I still chug along anyway, because I know that I will eventually reach a payout, and also because I love reading about everyone's lives.

@moffittjc I sometimes hope to make a payout but if it passes, I say next time. I might do a payout every other month or even quarterly. I'll have good intentions and maybe someday I'll be able to spend a couple hours a day. I hope you are doing well.

Ultimately I think that is true of most of us considering even if we are able to make pay out or more each and every month—and I do—it is not enough to make any dent at all from a monetary perspective. Still, even that small amount has an impact, and if it were gone, very few of us would be here, including myself.

Interesting... I was still signing into WebAnswers until the site locked everyone out. We stopped being paid there several weeks before that happened. I was still talking with friends on Bubblews until they locked everyone out even though they had stopped paying me several months before that.

Not me. Once I saw the writing on the wall, for me, it was time to move on and find something else to do with my time. Time is money, even if it is for a pittance.

You are right about not many would be here if there was no money. Money motivates users to interact and finally more than money it is the interaction that ensures one's time is well spent.

For me that's the issue. The time. At least I can justify, with a little money coming in from what I am doing, that I am still doing something productive even if I am really just goofing off. lol

@allknowing I can imagine. People can say all they want they aren't here for the money, but time and time again when sites that pay stop paying, the people stop playing.

That's one of the things I love most about this site, is being able to interact and get to know so many people around the world. And despite our differences in politics, religion, culture and other forces, I have learned that for the most part we all have more similarities with each other than we do differences. People are people no matter where they live in the world. It's really cool to see and experience that here on myLot.

Many of us are also on FB and it's not for money, so I do not believe that people join a site only for the money. The little money we make here is a nice incentive to stay, but it is so little that I doubt that there are users who are here only for the money.

@porwest - This is true, but most sites that stopped paying also disappeared. I was not in myLot before, I joined 7 years ago. I know that a few stayed active even when the site stopped paying, not many. MyLot is the only site I know that stopped paying and restarted and many old users came back. May be because it's different from the other formats.

@LadyDuck Not sure. But I will say myLot is a bit of an anomaly. Beyond that, the current ownership got it right with the pay algorithm and that has a lot to do with some of its longevity.

I agree with you and disagree with you. Because not a single site that stopped paying that paid from the start still exists, and they do not exist because once the money stops, the participation stops and the sites are no longer viable. I will offer one exception, and that was myLot, although I was not here when the money was cut off for a spell. But from what I gathered, paricipation here was almost nonexistent when the money stopped.

You're right. As much as I love the people who post here, I would be gone if the money dried up. I don't know where I would go, maybe nowhere. I have books to write and would focus on them.

That is part of my thing too. I need to feel like I am being productive even if I am not, and the little money we get helps me to justify what otherwise might be "wasting time."

I remember when mylot stopped paying and lots were gone, money is motivating people to keep thinking creative ideas whatever the amount is.

I think it is more an issue of time. Not that people are not important, but our time is. And so, the money helps to compensate for it and gives us an incentive to spend more time here as opposed to in the real world.

I have been here since inception of my Lot and I will be here as long as it survives and even when it did not pay, I was here, so I differ on that aspect. If you were here since the beginning, you would know many members here that are still here and were when no money was to be had and how fun it was back in the day. I sure do appreciate the little I get here.

I love being here and interacting with so many wonderful people. But I'm not going to lie, if this site wasn't paying I'd jump ship. But....before I did, I would make sure to reach out to many of the wonderful people on this site and find alternate ways of staying in touch with them, such as through email or Facebook or whatever. There are so many people here that I am friends with on Facebook, even though I don't actually post on social media sites. But if myLot went away, it is reassuring that I know I would still have a way to reach out to--and keep in touch with--so many wonderful friends I've met here. But yes, the monetary value is important.

I'm here for the friendship. The money is a side perk. I'm on Facebook for the friendships as well; and there's no money involved.

I am here mostly for the friendship too and agree the money is a side perk. At the same time, my time is valuable, and without the monetary incentive, I'd prefer to operate in the real world. Besides, most of my "friends" are people in business or in business circles, and we typically talk about money and opportunities—so there is a financial gain there as well.
