Darkness Towards The New Year

Yesterday, I read one of mylotter's posts about darkness or something. That makes me remember the current situation in the dorm that I rent. Since last week, the fluorescent light in one of the bathroom showers has been broken. Some of the tenants have reported to the officer or owner of that private dorm. Well, to my surprise, one day, the owner send a text in the dorm group. "Someone, buy the fluorescent lights and fix it". I mean, you are the owner. Isn't that the owner of the place supposed to be the one to do the maintenance? Why ask us to buy the light and fix it ourselves? So, what happened to our deposits and monthly rentals, use it to go to the club and party? That's one. Two, the position of the light is quite high. Unless you are as tall as a giraffe, then you don't need a ladder. Since the shower light is broken, almost all the tenants are showering in the second bathroom shower. Well, I adapt to that situation. I put my phone in the plastic, then turn the phone flashlight on when in the shower. Still, are we going to shower in the dark until next year? If the owner's attitude is like this, the answer would be most likely yes. Stay safe, take care. Adie, December 2022.

I am so sorry you are living in such barbaric and unsafe conditions. He should be punished by law that owner.

@RebeccasFarm This may be strange, but I hope you can pray for me so that I can get good news this week. I'm trying to move back to the campus dorm and I even ask my supervisor to talk to the principal of the campus dorm to receive one more student.

Worst, the owner of at least the ones in charge of this particular rental dorm is a woman. Maybe her big boss is a man, but she herself is barbaric indeed. I mean, I can figure out much of her attitude through most of how she messaged other people. It feels like she should return to kindergarten.

Sometimes is the owner, some time is the tenants. But when a problem occurs, I think it's best to inform the owner about it first. Then agree with him on a solution. Hopefully your problem will be solved before the new year comes

Well, like what I have mentioned in the post, we did tell the owner quite a several times since last week. Imagine most of us keep reminding the owner to to do the maintenance, but what did she do? Leave early for Christmas and ends up asking us to replace it instead? That's her place that being in charge. Not only this one, there are many things that they didn't do the maintenance on that I haven't and didn't mention in this site. It suppose to be owner's responsibility, not us. This is a rental private dorm though.

@Adie04 then the owner is not a very good person. I guess she just wants as much money as possible and no expenses. Is there a contract? The responsibilities should be clear.

@Kasjnak Yup, I expect her attitude as stingy and money-driven as well. I know right now we need as much money as they do for our life support, but still, if you have a business, maintenance is important if you want to be in the business line for the long term. Unfortunately, there is no contract given. So maybe this is why they just do as they please. I actually do not really like to sign contracts or something, but experiencing this type of situation makes me feel like I should find room for tenants with contract signing in the near future.

That sounds strange, typically it is the landlord who makes repairs.

I know right! I always hear that it's the owners or anyone who's in charge of that place to make repairs or something. But this is the very first time hearing and also experienced it; the owner that asks tenants to fix things instead of themselves. So, so strange. What do they do? Having Christmas party since last week?

That should be the responsibility of the owner, let's say you're in a hotel.

@Adie04 Automatically no one will want to stay and the owner will experience a very big loss.

You are right. And I believe that those who offers a stay or a room for rent for other people would be call as owners and they should do the maintenance. And yes, let's say you own a hotel. If you don't do maintenance, who's going to stay at your place?

@May2k8 Yup, I agree with you. Nobody wants to stay longer at a place, especially when it is unhygienic and broken facilities everywhere. Even potential new tenants will find other places if they see this condition. Shake my head.

I don't think reporting is going to be easy. I guess viral about the owner's attitude towards maintenance is better. Nowadays, the only way people to be aware is viral. May not be a good idea, but I guess people nowadays more aware if things are gone viral.

With her barbaric attitude, I guess she won't back down. Best way is to move and never return to this place.
