An interesting cactus

While my luck with plants is dismal, my aunt manages to make anything thrive richly! I love visiting their home. We were there for Christmas and have a great time. I saw this lovely little cactus plant in a little pot it was unique and I loved the brilliant contrast between the green and the red (or is that pink). It looked happy and chirpy! Have you seen such a colorful cactus plant? PS: For some reason, the picture appears horizontally stretched after uploading

They are two cactus plants that were bound together. I think it was grafted together to look like they are one.

Yes, to make the green cactus look like it had a red bloom. There are a lot of those sold here.

@pitstop It's not a flower the one on top is a different cactus and the one under is also a different variety that was cut and put together. Eventually, the two plants will bond together like they are one plant.

I wonder if it is to do with the image size

@pitstop Maybe not the size as they won't show at all if they're over 3Mb but maybe it's the dimensions - too wide, too narrow or something like that.

This is the first thing I bought as a gift for my husband to place on his desk in his office. We were not even dating. Its botanical name is Gymnocalycium mihanovichii.

Is it a single plant or a grafted plant with 2 components.

@pitstop It is a single plant, they are all like that. Some have a yellow top instead of red.

@LadyDuck @pitstop Only the top part is the Gymnocalycium mihanovichii, they are mutant forms that lack chlorophyll and consequently other colours show through. But without chlorophyll to make food of course they will soon die so to keep them alive they are grafted onto another type of normal green cactus, Hylocereus. @rsa101 is right.

There seems to be two theories being discussed in this group.

I had seen some different types of cacti. My younger brother had shown them to me from his small garden.

Those plants are not 'real' (or rather not natural); they are created by grafting part of one plant onto another.
