A blast from the past

I have all my photos in files and mostly I can find what I’m looking for without too much trouble. Today, going through the ‘Black/White’ file, I came across this photo of my brother and sister. They are twins and were born in 1938. Unfortunately, my brother passed away at the age of 79. He always had very bad eyesight and ended up totally blind. When my mother was in hospital and the first baby appeared, the doctor said ‘Wait a minute. There’s another one.’ That was the first they knew that there were twins. It’s a bit different nowadays, isn’t it?

@JudyEv No surprises at all now. When our first grandchild was expected our daughter-not-in-law asked if I wanted to be present at the birth. Apparently my expression indicated my answer before I verbalised it as politely as I could.

The pic is very cute. Now parents know in the second or third month of pregnancy if they are having one kid or multiple. Most doctors recommend sonography in the early stage of pregnancy.

She was in hospital after her hip operation at 99, and met a family taking their baby twins home. They chatted a bit then Mum said 'I've got twins too but mine are 70.' Wouldn't that blow them away?

Twins are nice when you get a girl and a boy. They both look so cute in that picture.

What a sweet pair of twins. Sad that he has passed away and that he lost his sight before that. She has the prettiest eyes.

They are the cutest twins ever. In the past, I suppose, you couldn't tell they were twins until they went out. It has always been a mystery as to whether a baby is a boy, a girl, or twins for the first nine months after birth. Today, however, we are able to foresee them and even witness them develop inside their mother's womb. There are some who can even tell if the baby has any health issues when the mother is pregnant. When it comes to pregnancy, we have come a long way.

@JudyEv That is why pregnancy-related deaths have significantly gone down already for those living in urban or developed countries.

This is really a precious picture, by the way is the technique so advanced at that time? The picture seems as clear as a digital one.

It's a studio portrait and the old photo was then scanned. It's certainly lovely and clear.

A lot different! My mom said the doctor first thought I was a boy because all he saw was a head full of hair. Then the rest of me was born.

I'm a bit surprised that she was in hospital actually, in 1938. I thought the 'medicalisation of childbirth' was something that really only began in the 1950s.

@JudyEv In the 1930s, you mean? In our part of the world I think they mostly relied on the district nurse.

@Fleura Right through our history, I think that if a doctor and/or hospital were available that's where pregnant mums would go. I should research it one day. Maybe it's to do with the distance that has to be travelled if something goes wrong.

I don't think midwives were in such numbers here. Hospital births would have been the norm. I remember being surprised when hearing that women in England mostly depended on midwives.

This is a pretty photo. The same happened to the sister of my Mom. After the girl appeared the doctor noticed that there was another one, a baby boy. It was not 1938, it was the year 1953.

Oh wow! So many years later and it was still happening. Maybe it was the same for many unless the doctor managed to pick up two heartbeats.

@JudyEv - The sister of my Mom did not live in Milan, but in the country side. The doctor of my Mom told her that she possibly had twins, it was only one, my very BIG brother.
