Our new rockets will reach 499 kilometres

The Australian Army is to spend millions with the purchase of the US-made High Mobility Artillery Rocket (HIMARS) system. This has made news headlines as well it might.
But what strikes me as funny is that the system will allow the Arby to hit targets in excess of 499 kilometres. Say what? 499 kilometres? Why not say 500 and be done with it? Or ‘in excess of 450 kms’? Not only was it in the print version but the guy interviewed on TV at lunchtime also spouted ‘499 kilometres’. I wonder if someone else wrote his speech and he didn’t read it through first.
I sometimes despair of our newspapers and TV reporters. Their grammar and spelling are shocking for starters. That probably shouldn’t be a key issue but linked with their lack of professionalism in other areas, it gives a person very little faith in their reporting. They also have little empathy or sensitivity when interviewing public figures or victims or crime.
I don't have a photo of a rocket but here's a tree that's been struck by lightning.

Maybe they thought 500 kms was unbelievable? Either way, 499 or 500 kms, it's just slightly more than 310 miles (310.03 or 310.65).

I wonder if the lightning strike was from over 499 km away. It makes you wonder where those reporters got their education when they can't spell and have poor grammar skills.
I have many things that become key issues when I see something that just makes me shake my head.

Yep, you hit those issues right on the top of the nail. I have absolutely no faith in 'jornalists' anymore, all they seem to want are articles that will shock people and make them lots of money and as you pointed out often they can't spell or write a proper paragraph.

Why 499? Because either (a) metric versus imperial or (b) you ARE dealing with the U.S. government!!
Or maybe BOTH!

Rockets cause a lot of destruction and this tree was destroyed by lightning so there is a bit of a connection.

The number 499 leaves no room for a tolerance error ! It won't do if it is 495 or 501 !

Reporters are the same here. Most have no sense. Maybe they thought 499 sounded safer than 500. Like 4.99 is less than 5.00.
. That penny don't make a lot of difference but less than sounds cheaper

The news media is a breed all unto themselves. Their grammar, spelling and professionalism should be key.

Same here. The professionalism of media is declining.
