How do you choose a gift for your beloved ones?

I always have this trouble in selecting gifts to my husband. Everytime I buy something like a shaver or purse he will say, " Don't spend money I don't need it." I can tell that he doesn't like it that much since he just put it aside after some time. So I chose the easiest way, I just gave him money. But that seems not emotional.
How do you choose gifts to your beloved one? What do you send them on an important occasion?

One of my in-laws simply hates receiving gifts (or giving gifts). I ended up giving that person nothing in the end (I never got anything from that person anyway after wasting my money and time choosing all the best gifts I could think of - That person just chucked them all in a corner after giving me a glare.)

If i have much money,i'll give the one i deeply love a big diamond, but i'm very poor.If God let me see her again,i only can give her a confess that i love her since the first sight i saw her.

I don't. Before I just chose what was in common. And the album was the common gift.
