We're leaving this house-sit tomorrow

Tomorrow, we leave here for the next house-sit. We need to start collecting our bits and pieces from the rooms we’ve been using. We always seem to have a lot of things that need power and accessing enough power points means that gadgets are plugged in wherever we can find a spare plug. Nowadays, we include a four- or six-pin plug which makes life easier. The photo shows the hallway of our house-sit. I like the red glass at the sides of the door. I can’t really recall a farmhouse where people come in the front door. There always seems to be another side or back door which is more commonly used.

It's a beautiful door. Good luck on your next house sit.

There is a bit more to do at the next. Mostly checking on watering and hand-watering pot-plants. There are more pets too, mostly birds, but they mostly have self-feeders and waterers. We'll need to make sure nothing runs out of water as it's so hot here now.

@JudyEv How hot is it there, anywhere near 100 degrees?

@RubyHawk Yes, just about all up around the 100 at the moment with a few slightly cooler days.

You appear to take pleasure in house sitting there. It almost has the feel of a short getaway when you stay in someone else's home and enjoy your time there.

@JudyEv How far is it from your house? Do you need to travel distances to do your house sits?

Yes, the house-sits are a bit like mini-vacations for us.

@rsa101 This one is about an hour from our own home. Once there, we stay in the house but I guess you've worked that out.

That's the way it was here when I was a kid. We always went to the back or side door when visiting anyone. Only strangers knocked on the front door.

@JudyEv Our front door was at the front of the house from the street (really a dirt road). And the back door was at the end of the driveway beside the house.

On most of the places we've been lately, it's pretty difficult even to get to the front door!

I like that stained glass, or colored glass. And that doorway is beautiful. How far away is the next house sit?

It's about a half-hour drive to the next one. This is red dirt country but the next is more white sand. Not sand exactly but loamy.

@thislittlepennyearns Loam is apparently sand, silt and a small amount of clay. The other place had much more clay in the soil.

@JudyEv loamy? I will have to look that term up

@yesiisey Maybe a hobby as we don't get paid for doing it. Mostly we do it for friends or our friends' friends.

These are not our own homes or houses. We move into these houses while the owners are away, perhaps on holiday. We look after any pets and we might water the garden or the pot plants. It's called house-sitting.

It sounds interesting to house sit. I have not really heard anyone house sitting before. I have not stay in a farmhouse before, and I usually visit those houses with front door only. It sounds fun to have side or back door.

@JudyEv Usually did the house owners go for vacation and that's why they ask for house-sitting? Usually how long do you stay in one house? It's like vacation for you too - visiting different houses.

My teenage home had deep red sidelights at the interior door (the vestibule just had clear glass windows). The hall was about that wide, or maybe a bit wider as there was a chiffarobe in it.

I have never heard the name chiffarobe before, I had to look it up! Obviously MyLot hasn't either because it's underlining the word as if it's a spelling mistake!

Each house is different and the duties are also different. The next one has a lot of pot plants and quite a few birds. It will mostly involve making sure the birds don't run out of water.

@JudyEv With where our family room is we can't hear a knock at the front door anyways. Now that we put the doorbell on the garage door most figure out to go to that door easy

That's the way it here with a lot of the houses. To go to the front door, you'd have to go past windows and would doubt scare the householders silly.

Ooh, that’s nice. I had forgotten all about houses with long entry halls like that until I went to Helen Keller’s birthplace in Alabama. That house has one of those. Don’t know that I’d want to clean it but it’s absolutely beautiful!

@JudyEv — at the Keller house they had something in the hall called a “fainting couch,” which was where people sat when overcome with heat. With the doors opened at both ends of the house that would be the ideal place for cross-ventilation.

Behind me was another door to the outside so I guess in hot weather before A/C the doors would both be open to create a sort of breezeway.
