Oh, are y’all gonna hate me tomorrow. But that’s tomorrow’s song. Today we continue through the month-long look at my favorite Oscar-nominated songs with a song that was both a #1 hit and an Academy Award nominee.
Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To) - Diana Ross
Reading the reviews of Diana Ross’ movies, Lady Sings the Blues and Mahogany, it appears that she could have been another Cher with endless music and acting awards…except they wouldn’t give her a good movie. She was nominated for Best Actress for her role as Billie Holiday in the first film. Here, the best she could manage was to have the theme song nominated for Best Original Song (which it lost to “I’m Easy” by Keith Carradine from Nashville) as well as scoring a #1 hit on the charts with the single.
Okay, Billy Dee Williams was in both films, too, so there IS that bonus.
And, from the “gee I didn’t know that” department, Carole King’s ex-husband and songwriting partner Gerry Goffin co-wrote this beautiful song that stands as one of my favorite Diana Ross solo songs. It’s supreme!
Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To)
Written by Gerry Goffin and Michael Masser
Recorded by Diana Ross
From Mahogany, 1975

Yes it is. Diana Ross had some great ballads in the 70s (remember “Touch Me in the Morning”?).

Pegged that one! Find the biggest “nope” in your house, have Whiskey Puppy chew on it, and get it ready for tomorrow.

Beautiful song. I remember a girl over my house when it popped up. She sounded surprised, but just said, "Awww, 'Mahogony'. I love this song".

It is a beautiful song. I don’t think anyone has fond memories of the movie, but definitely the song!

It doesn’t have a good plot to me, and the reviews were bad. Still, if you get to look at Billy Dee Williams for a while….
