Two hens, five chicks all safely yarded

I’ve talked about the hens at our house-sit that have been sitting on some guinea fowl eggs. You can catch up here: Maybe we'll get some chickens while we're here / myLot We’ve now put the second hen in the smaller pen and they have five chicks to look after. What was interesting was that the second hen was in the big yard with three chicks and we needed to put her and the chicks in the smaller yard. The chicks could get through the netting of the big yard so we caught the hen first then went outside the big yard to find the babies. Instinctively, the three were huddled together against the back of the shed. They were keeping very quiet, trying not to draw attention to themselves. Isn’t nature wonderful? The photo is Vincent’s, used with permission.

I'm glad it's sorted too. We leave on Sunday so just have to keep them alive till then. No reason why anything should go wrong.

@wolfgirl569 You do feel very responsible. A leaf fell off one of the indoor plants this morning and now I'm worrying I didn't water it enough or I watered it too much! lol

I'm much happier now it's all done and dusted. I've been watching them anxiously, waiting for something to happen.

This hen and her chick are both beautiful. You are right that nature is wonderful. Baby animals know how to hide and try not to draw attention to themselves.

Sweet! Love the photo, but wouldn't know the first thing about handling hens and chicks. Glad you were there for them.

I'm surprised sometimes how much I know about sheep and chooks, etc. If I do say so myself, I think we are quite good value looking after a farm and pets.

@LindaOHio It was quite dark in the shed but with a strong light coming in so it was quite tricky trying to get the balance right.

It would make a good jigsaw too. There would be lots of tiny brushstrokes if you painted it.

I'm so glad you found the chicks. Yes, mother nature equipped many wild babies with instincts to keep them safe to some degree.

Some would take off in all directions but obviously these were wired to stick together and stay very quiet.

when we go near the pen, the hens 'purr' away to the chooks. Vince says it's choosese for 'It's alright, you don't need to be afraid.'

Great photo! The little one is so cute! Did you use any sort of tool to catch the hen? I recall and Aunt in Texas who used a straightened out wire coat hanger to snag a foot.

They are usually not quite so hard to catch when they have chickens. We angled her into a corner and were able to grab her. The coat hanger idea is really good. When we were on the farm, we'd make sort of shepherd's crooks with a piece of wire.
