Today’s song might cause a little bit of controversy. Not because it’s not included in the list of my favorites that were nominated for an Oscar in the “Best Original Song” category. No, it’ll be controversial because I ranked it ahead of “Over the Rainbow.” Put on your dancing shoes!
#9: Let’s Hear It for the Boy - Deniece Williams
I’ll go even more controversial here: this song lost to “I Just Called to Say I Love You” by Stevie Wonder (from The Woman in Red), and that’s a crime. That may be Stevie’s lamest song ever. (The video was worse, with the “Wonder bread” slice flying through it throughout the song. )
That was a good year for songs, with this and the theme song from Footloose, Phil Collins’ “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now),” and the theme to Ghostbusters. And they lost to the worst song on the list.
Obviously this one gets my vote. Deniece Williams may not be well-known in pop music (this and the duet she did with Johnny Mathis, “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late,,” are her big hits), but she’s very well-established in gospel music, having won four Grammy Awards for her gospel music.
And this song just makes you want to cut footloose!!
Let’s Hear It for the Boy
Written by Tom Snow and Dean Pitchford
Recorded by Deniece Williams
From Footloose, 1984

Know it. Not a top fave but it will do. I like just about everything Stevie Wonder does.

My dancing shoes don’t fit because I have two left feet. . But it is a great song to “do something that kind of impersonates dancing” to!

Yep, that movie was 39 years ago. If you’re like me you can’t remember 39 minutes ago.

That’s a good one as well. I’m surprised it didn’t get a nomination.

It was a big hit here in America, but so was the theme song (“Footloose” by Kenny Loggins), and that probably overshadowed this one.
