Perhaps a long movie is not popular in the future?

It is raining and there is no better plan in the weekend. So I told my son go to see a movie in a cinema. To my surprise, he said he was not interested as one of the current popular movies last for 2 hours and 55 minutes. He said it was quite long for him. This is an interesting found. I agree that it is a long movie. But it also seems today the children don't want to watch a movie so much. Sometimes they even just watch the review videos about the movies and that's it. As the reviews videos can already explain the movies very well and it is no need to spend longer time watch the whole movie.

I don’t know that long movies have ever been popular. “Epic” films like Ben-Hur and The Ten Commandments had built-in intermissions because they were so long.

I heard about Ben-Hur but I haven't watched it yet. It is a very classical movie.

Some War and Historical or Fantasy movies tend to be long. We had a popular war movie in 2003 that was even 3.5 hours! Not something easily watchable at a stretch in the hall. May be today people don't want to watch longer content in part due to a lot of Series in Streaming media like Netflix, Amazon Prime etc.

A 3 hour movie would tax me to sit still long enough to watch it to the end. Most of the time, the reviews show the best parts of the movie anyway, so why waste money watching the entire thing? It sounds like your son is practical as well as frugal. I still watch movies online that last less than 2 hours. I've been watching some while I'm awake at night and nobody is talking with me on myLot.

That is true. I have a sister and she is younger than me. She likes watching movies though, but her attention span is short. Then even if the movie lasts just for an hour, she doesn't want to watch it anymore.

I would say we live in more of an instant world. Everyone wants things now and fast. I can't imagine many siting through a long movie.

Usually I think most Indian movies are long because there are singing and dancing scenes. But I think this is also a character of Indian movies. In recent years I have watched more Indian movies and some of them are very good.

Here we don't have such kind of habit. If the movie lasts for three hours, there won't be a break

@youless I remember the intermissions. We had beautiful movies theaters in Milan with large cafes inside the theater. Those who wanted, got up and went to have a drink. They announced when the movie was ready to start again.

That would be sad. But if a movie is 3 hours long, it had better be good.

The length can't judge whether it is a good movie or not. But I hope it will be a very good movie, otherwise it will be a time waste.

Some movies could easily be cut down in time without losing anything important. I'm not fond of overlong movies either.

People's attention span have indeed become shorter the past couple of years, I think. Maybe it's because society nowadays seem to prioritize all things 'instant'. It's sad to think that this extends to something as wonderful as movies.
