Calling all tooth-cleaners

The photo is of my father’s shaving mug and brush. I don’t have a photo of a tooth-brush. We both went to the dentist yesterday. I go every six months but Vince hasn’t been since we moved to the city. Neither of us like dentists much but we had a great dentist at our last place and were regular customers for our scale and clean. Once we moved, Vince baulked at finding a new one. However, he thought he was getting a cavity so read the bios of the dentists where I go and chose the one who said she specialised in frightened children and people who were scared of dentists. She happens to be the one I see anyway. I think it’s time he ‘manned up’ but there you go. That’s all trivia really but what I would like to know is who uses an electric toothbrush and what can you tell me about them please? I know nothing. I gather the heads get replaced every so often. What should I look for in a new one? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Our dentist suggested two brands. I like them simple without the fancy stuff and replace the heads every 3 months. They do a thorough job, but I floss, too. We’ve been using them for years. Happy Vince is seeing your dentist.

@JudyEv I’d give you our brand, but they probably don’t sell it in Australia. Simple is best, but get an electric rechargeable one.

@DianneN Vince isn't one to mess around. We've bought two now and they are rechargeable so at least we got that right! lol

There seems to be a huge range in price. We just want something simple too. We'll go and check them out at a store one day soon.

I can relate to how you feel because I'm not really excited about getting my teeth cleaned and examined. I had mine examined sometime last year, and I suppose I should do it once more if it needs repairing or cleaning.

I go every six months now. When I leave, I make the next appointment; otherwise I'd probably put it off for ages.

@JudyEv Oh wow you follow it religiously. I forgot to mention about the picture you posted looks antique already since it's in porcelain.

I don’t use an electric on I’ve had a few and just don’t care for them. They vibrate too much and it makes my lips feel weird and it spits a mess around the sink. That seems like a dainty shaving set for a man.

@JudyEv you still have to brush around as you usually do even the the bristles vibrate or spin. They are supposed to help clean better though.

@shaggin The dentist told me just to hold it on each tooth. She said if you use it as a normal boothbrush it's too hard on your teeth. I guess I'll soon find out.

I remember having one once when I was a kid because they were “the rage,” but I don’t know that they did any better than manually scrubbing them.

I asked the dentist. She said there are a couple of spots I miss and she thought an electric toothbrush might get to those spots better than I do. We shall see I guess.

The dentist told me how to use them properly. You more or less hold it on the tooth but cover all the surfaces. You don't use it like a normal toothbrush.

By accident I bought a package of two Oral B (battery included) toothbrushes, finally opened them and discovered that I really like using one. They even come in medium and gentle or soft, so my wife tried one and likes it a lot too. My hygienist said all you really have to do is hold them against your teeth at a 45 degree angle, not even necessary to brush. I do brush some, but it feels great.

Thanks for that. My dentist said not to 'brush' with them but just hold it against the tooth for a few seconds, as you said. You have to do outside, inside then the cutting edge. I'm a full bottle!!

A couple of different heads came with ours. (Vince has already bought them) They weren't too expensive but if you brush in front of a smart phone, it will tell you which bits you're missing. For some reason, I find that hilarious.

I just use a plain, manual brush. Electric toothbrush cleans more thoroughly. But it's much more expensive than the plain one.

My dentist had good things to say about Sonicare - and that sometimes you can get good deals on them. She was saying that the sonic technology is the one to get - the movement of it works better to clean than a cheap electric toothbrush that just shakes around. We don't use them ourselves, but have been thinking about it for a long time.

@JudyEv We get flossers especially for the back teeth. It's not flat like the regular pics, the top is like an angled horseshoe. I think the brand is Plackers.

Thanks for your input. There is one area of my teeth that I'm not getting to properly and I thought an electric toothbrush might help. Also, I find it nearly impossible to floss between my back teeth.

Funnily enough, I went to be scaled and cleaned today at the dentist too Judy, how about that. Well, I love the sonic electric toothbrushes. They clean very well. They are gentle but seem to get in the crevices much better. And the agitation loosens the plaque really well.

We ended up buying Oral-B. When we go away, we can take one brush but our own heads. It has a little travel case too. Once we decide what sort of head we like, we'll buy some extra.
