funny story to that. I didnt go to college right out of high school. I started working 6 months after high school and I've been with the same compnay for about 18 years now. I've been in the computer field for over 10 years and all of it has been on the job training. This summer I sarted working on my BS and hte courses I'm taking are stuff I'e been working on for a long time so it should be easy to get by.

Wouldn't that increase your earnings in the short term? Or does it really only increase them after you get the degree?

In your field I can see where on the job training is much more important. The computer fields literally can change with every day. The continuing education occurs more on the job then it does in a classroom. The only thing you have to do every year is renew your certifications.

I quit college after 2 years to get married. I had majored in music. I had 2 kids and life went on. I began working as a cake decorator. 18 years later, I decided I wanted to go back and finish my bachelor's degree just so I could say that I did. But, I'm still a cake decorator!

I went to school for music also, but it's awful hard to pay the bills when you try to survive as a musician!

No, I realized that I enjoyed what I studied but when I got out in the world, I found it was not what I wanted to do nor did I enjoy it. No education is ever wasted, I find that from time to time that I use what I studied in one form or another. I find that I work better and more effectively when I enjoy what I am doing.

I think that fits the majority of people who did graduate from college. Neither my girlfriend or myself work in the fields that we studied in college. I finally finished paying for my education two years ago and she is still paying for hers.

Considering I'm about to Go to college, I suppose I don't exactly merit a place in this discussion, but I'd just like to say that first of all, thank you for this discussion, it's something I'd like to hear myself and never thought of. I'd also like to second the above opinion that no education is ever wasted. At least, I'd like to believe that....

Education will never be wasted. Even the other classes that I took can be applied to some things in my life. And of course many of my other college antics make for great stories!

I sstudied music, but I play now for fun and relaxation rather then money. When the opportunity comes to make money playing I don't miss it, but for the most part those opportunities are few and far between. Right now I am trying to make it as a freelance writer. It still allows me to use my creative talents and make enough money to get by.

I did not go to college, but in highschool I took enough courses required for greenhouse management. I tried to get into working a greenhouse job here, but the positions are always full. So maybe some day I'll open my own... - DNatureofDTrain
