Fruit yoghurt - healthy or unhealthy?!

A healthy snack?

If it has fruit and yoghurt it should be healthy, right? This is a very popular snack among kids - it has yoghurt, fruit bits and is flavoured. There's mango, strawberry, blueberry, peach and some other flavours. We buy this once in a while for the kids but I too love it as a mid morning filler snack. One thing I've noticed is that it tasted very sweet. And a look at the ingredients confirms this. Every small cup of 100 grams has 10 grams of added sugar (in addition to the sugar in the fruit and yoghurt by itself). No wonder kids love it!

Most of these packaged food that claim to be healthy are not. Added sugar or artificial sweetner is definitely not healthy. And I guess fresh fruit is always healthier than preserved ones. You can have home made curd and add fresh fruits at home. I guess that would be cheaper too.

@pitstop Same here. In fact it becomes one dessert for my diabetic self. When I crave sweet, I go for curd and banana together.

Yes, I read a lot of labels. They dump sugar in nearly everything, they think that since it says yogurt, it sounds healthy. I usually just get plain yogurt and put my own fresh fruit in it, I don't like it so sweet.

@pitstop So many ready-to-eat foods that we buy are loaded up with sugars. Sometimes it's hard to find a healthy alternative.

I just wish it had lesser sugar, so that I don't need to feel guilty.

It's a shame that a lot of these snacks are full of sugar. Anything fat-reduced is likely to have extra sugar.

In my opinion, it is best to buy natural yoghurt, add fruit and sweeten it with honey. Then we know what our children eat and that it is healthy.

That's a great idea and seems to be a popular idea posted here.

Just because a food contains fruit and yogurt doesn't necessarily mean it's healthy. The addition of added sugar in flavored versions can significantly increase the overall sugar content, which can have negative impacts on health.

It's good that you read labels. There is sugar in practically everything.

They're supposed to be if its plain yogurt and real fresh fruits. But those store bought ones are usually not as "healthy" as it claims to be. Same with those fruit juices that comes in packs or powdered forms. Those contains too much sugar on top of other artificial ingredients and preservatives. Fresh is still the best. Just buy plain yogurt and put your own fruits on it or nuts or anything else you like to top it with.
