Do you ever go down weird "rabbit holes" on the internet?

I worked this morning with the littlies and then came home and did very little. I practiced some guitar, put some felt on a pair of coasters, fed Kitty some wet food, and then got lost in internet land. I researched Donald Trump's compulsive lying (he even lies about his golf handicap) and then researched the Asiana plane crash at San Francisco International Airport some nine (close to ten) years ago. I won't provide all of the details, as they would bore many MyLotters, but I will say that one of the contributing factors was over-reliance on computers for flying commercial airplanes. My friend, Ed Musselman, was the "assistant hay boss" when I stacked hay in Montana in the 1980s and 1990s. His wife, Paunee, was the hay boss. Ed had been a pilot for most of his life, and was at one point the "oldest flying pilot in Montana." He flew DC-10s for Western Airlines before he retired (he said they were great airplanes) and at one point had flown Constellations (four-engine propeller planes) for earlier airlines. In 2015, when this photo was taken, I helped him fix his car, and got him into a discussion of the Asiana crash, which I believe occurred in 2013. Miraculously, only three people died in that crash. Ed said that current pilots were becoming too dependent on technology, and did not have a "feel" for how their airplanes were performing. He told me that he sometimes landed DC-10s, with many souls on board, manually, even if "autopilot" could have done more of the work. He took me up once or twice in the single engine planes that he kept at his Montana ranch. It was fun and less scary than I thought it would be. I'll attach a photo of Ed, taken in 2015, when he was about 90. He lived to be 95 or 96. He still flew into his early 90s. Do you ever get "lost" in internet rabbit holes?

I wonder if most of us do. But it's too early in the morning to be philosophical.

I agree with Ed. Everything is to dependent on technology now.

@ifa225 Or he was just a grumpy old pilot who was frustrated that some of the young pilots couldn't fly planes. I should research when "autopilot" was invented.

Oh yes, often reading about things I didn't even know I was interested in! The other day as we were clearing everything away after the pantomime, a piece of acrylic sheet was being thrown out. It was brand new, still with the protective film on it, so I was sure someone could use it. I took it home and offered it on Freegle. But since I didn't really know what it was (only unspecified plastic) I searched for the name on the protective film - Oroglass - and that led me to the story of the disastrous Summerland fire in the Isle of Man in 1973, which I had never even heard of before!

I am sure you are right. I worry about doctors too. Some barely glance at you but just start punching away at their computers.

Ed might have been right. We all rely too much on technology now days. When pilots flew by the seat of their pants there were fewer plane crashes.

In some ways, we're safer now than we were flying 50 years ago. But technology, or pilot confusion over technology, has caused many recent crashes.

Aren't we all stuck in our rabbit holes? Sit cozy with our devices, oblivious to the world and people around us. It's only going to go south before something drastic is done.

Been down some pretty weird ones trying to research some ridiculous novel scenarios. If you want to end up somewhere strange leave Youtube running on auto-select all day and see where you wind up. Did it by accident. I thought I'd shut down the computer while I went to work. When I got home it was into things I'd never dream of trying to look up. It was awhile ago and I don't remember where it took me. Some things are best left forgotten.

We all are becoming too depending on computers and technology, your friend was right. We should learn to write again our notes on a piece of paper and turn off our computers and phone for a few hours a day. I get lost in the Internet rabbit holes even too much.

I have had my moments like when I had my anxiety hike way high for some reason and I could not shake it and spent two weeks watching videos of all the worst airline disasters and then when it happened again I switched to the worst rail disasters, the things I heard and saw should have really done me in but for some reason after this I returned to my normal self again, Go figure,

Every now and then I'll go down a rabbit hole on the Internet. It can be both fun and interesting as you dig deeper and deeper. And sometimes you end up going off on a completely different tangent than what you started after. Next thing you know, 3 hours have gone by! I agree that pilots today are too reliant on technology. I know in their training they still have to learn the manual way of doing things, but if they're not practicing it over and over, they can forget their knowledge.

@TheHorse Well, Trump is a train wreck, which is another type of disaster similar to a plane crash, so maybe it’s all interconnected.

Yes, I sometimes start researching one thing and end up spending an hour online. Ed, God bless him, sounds like he was an interesting man. He flew planes in his early 90s???!!!! I actually feel safer on a small plane even though they seem to crash more often. Great picture. I agree that we rely on technology too much these days.

He retired from Western Airlines...but I don't know when. He always had a small plane or two at the ranch.
