Missing the Mail man

Although I love using the social media and make great use of sites like Zoom and Skype where I can see the people I am talking to, there is one thing that technology has almost removed from my life. and I miss it. Namely the pleasure in receiving a hand written letter through the post. Letters may have been a day or two out of date but they were intimate messages, the letter I held in my hand had previously been held in a friend's hand. Prepared unhurriedly, carefully folded into an envelope, secured and sealed with a stamp. Taken to a post office and posted. Once read it was put away carefully and in some cases, it would be read again several times. They are not read and deleted. Some are kept for years. I miss hearing a letter come through a letter box and drop on the floor. I miss settling down at a table and preparing my response in as neat handwriting as I could manage. I had a friend who wrote to me for years after I moved away. As she grew older I began to keep her letters. I have them still although she died several years ago. As long as I have them I feel she is still around. In a way they have become love letters.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on this. I still have some cards and notes from my grandmother who passed away way back in 1972. I treasure them and seeing her handwriting brings comfort because I still miss her after all these years.

I don't have any hand written letters with me anymore. They all got destroyed in them flood water. It's nice we have the electronic media now. We can save emails now.

That is sad, I expect you lost a lot of birthday cards too. I keep special cards and would hate to lose them like that.

When my nephew asked me what he should get his girlfriend for Valentine's Day, I suggested a handwritten love letter right away. I think it's more meaningful and still the sweetest.

The only mail I get now is bills. No excitement now when the post arrives.

The Mom of my husband used to send me written letters. I surely miss those since she passed away.

Receiving letters was something we all used to take for granted and now we realise the value of them.

It is definitely a forgotten thing. I can't tell you the last time I got anything other than a greeting card in the snail mail.

@41CombedaleRoad Mostly on birthdays and a few on our anniversary. More on Christmas, but even Christmas cards have really become a thing of the past. We used to stick them to the pass through between the kitchen and living room. Now if we get three or four a year that's something.

I have a couple of friends that feel as I do about snail mail so we exchange letters. My BFF and I used to write long letters to one another. I have a few still that I re-read occasionally. She passed in December 2022.

Those were the good old days. Those letters were genuine carried alot of emotions and are timeless. Technology changes everything now.

I miss getting letters too. It's been a while since I received and wrote a reply. I do that with a friend who doesn't use a computer or social media.

We get the mail about once a week now and often there is nothing there anyway. There is a 'mail room' in the clubhouse where we 'lifestyle residents' go to pick up our mail. I miss writing and receiving letters too.

I still keep letters from my high school friends, even from the one who I found out scammed me. You are right, it is a special feeling, holding a handwritten letter.
