Getting on people's nerves

Chatting with Sonja Rae about how a person’s small habits can get on your nerves reminds me of a backpacker we had. She worked 7 kms away in the town but stayed with us on and off for quite some time. I think she liked the company even if we were much older. Beggars can’t be choosers comes to mind. She had a twin sister but they didn’t get on at all well together which seemed very sad to me. Anyway, she talked about how she hated people who scuffed their feet when they walked. It was only much later that I realised she was probably talking about me. I wouldn’t have thought I scuffed my feet much but, in the house in my slippers, I probably did. The photo is mine of one or the couch-surfers we hosted. We would always try to show them some of the attractions around the place. It was good for us too as we saw our district through fresh eyes.

I wonder how many other annoying habits I have that I don't know about?

It's a nice photo... There always seem to be small things that can get on someone's nerves and we don't even realize we're doing them. *shrug*

@JudyEv I think she was still being rude. Just because something is annoying to you doesn't mean you bring it up in conversation.

I thought it seemed a funny thing to say. I guess she was trying to be circumspect and just drop a hint but it went straight over my head until much later.

It's irritating when one scuffs his/her feet.

Is that a roo? It seems so small. If the woman was talking about you then she was being rude. At least you weren't aware of it at the time though, correct?

Beggars shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth or insult them in any way

They are adults. You can see they have bulky pouches because they have joeys. They look smaller when they're feeding as the body seems to hang lower between the legs.

@RubyHawk They look much taller when they stand up straight but when they crouch to feed, the body seems to lower itself between the back legs.

I’m old, so I’ll scuff my feet when I walk if I want to! It is sad when family doesn’t get along.

I know my niece's twin boys were very competitive growing up but they are good friends now. I think it is especially sad when it's a twin.

Many people scuff in slippers because of the way they are made. I sometimes hear hubby in the mornings before I get up and in shoes he don't do that.

I think you're right. If she was noticing it, then I guess I was scuffing.

I've thought about taking in boarders but how to do it? It's hard to know if the people are trusty. Sweet photo.

The couch-surfers only ever stayed a few nights at a time. They didn't really 'board' as such.

Bless you for putting up couch surfers like that. You are good hosts I'm sure. A pity that her twin didn't get along with her. Ah, sometimes people's small habits get on my nerves, like I hate when people chew open-mouthed... but... then I wonder what habit I have

The habits that annoy me are mostly spoken ones. For instance, continually repeating "you know what I mean?" I am irritated too with people ending a sentence on an upturn, as though it is a question, wheereas it really is the end of a sentence and should sound like it!"

I know exactly what you mean about the upturn at the end of a sentence. That is REALLY annoying. Adding 'like' about every five words is another annoying habit. Once you pick up on it, it's nearly impossible to ignore and all you hear is this 'like', 'like' all the time.

I have to agree that something done constantly like scuffing feet can certainly get on ones nerves. Never though you could get so close to a kangaroo it must have been a patient one,

Kangaroos in public places can become quite tame. I guess deer do too. It's all about what they're used to.

At times, we may not become aware we are the targets until much later! Some of our habits can be annoying to others. I used to do that earlier but after tripping a couple of times, I lift my feet up now by habit.
