World Aids Day 2006

United States
December 1, 2006 1:01pm CST
Around forty million people are living with HIV throughout the world - and that number increases in every region every day. In the UK alone, more than 60,000 people are living with HIV and more than 7,000 more are diagnosed every year. Ignorance and prejudice are fuelling the spread of a preventable disease. World AIDS Day, 1 December is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV and AIDS. This year, it's up to you, me and us to stop the spread of HIV and end prejudice. http://www.worldaidsday.org/default.asp Today is still December 1, 2006 in the USA. In the other countries around the world, it is already December 2, 2006 but we can still celebrate this important day. My questions for our discussions:What kind of aids preventation programs or solutions that are being implemented in your country? Are there any health care programs to prevent the spreading of the disease in your country? What about some kind of solutions to assist the people who are afficted with the disease?

, observed December 1 each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. AIDS has killed more than 30 million people, with another 40 million people positive for HIV, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history. Despite recent, improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claimed an estimated 3.1 million (between 2.8 and 3.6 million) lives in 2005 of which, more than half a million (570,000) were children. The concept of a World AIDS Day originated at the 1988 World Summit of Ministers of Health on Programmes for AIDS Prevention. Since then, it has been taken up by governments, international organizations and charities around the world. From 1988 to 2004, the World AIDS Day was organized by UNAIDS, who, after consultation with other organizations, chose a theme. In 2005 UNAIDS handed over responsibility for World AIDS Day to The World AIDS Campaign (WAC), an independent organisation. In 2005, they chose Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise as the theme for World AIDS days through to 2010. This theme is not specific to World AIDS Day but also to the work WAC does throughout the year. The student element of the campaign, the Student Stop AIDS Campaign (SSAC), is a key part of increasing awareness among young people across the UK. This year it is Stop AIDS. Well, that is very, very true. It is also controllable in term of personal responsibilities. It is a preventable disease, EXCEPT if you are a unintentional victim or being unfortunate and got infected by blood transfusion, dirty needle, or even I heard that a lady passed away of aids because she contracted it through her dentist. :( Thank you for the reply. Best wishes with mylot earnings.

AIDS - AIDS
In my country ie India many electronic media and print media is spreading the message of its cause and prevention... But I don't think it really matters there ..I will not matter untill the genaral people come forward and take this responsibility.. World AIDS day is celebrated across the country but not for real sense it is only celebrated because u have to... It doesn't really matters to people who live in slums or those who r below the poverty line...

Yes, people needs to learn that it is a disease that they can prevent by following simple methods of prevention. They have to become aware that certain risky behaviour can affect their health and their life and it is affecting anybody, no matter rich or poor. Thank you for answering and enlightening my awareness of the world. Best wishes to you.
