Favorite Songs From Movies: Born to Be Wild

New month, new countdown! Back in January I did a monthlong look at songs that had been nominated for “best original song” by the Academy Awards people. I’m back to the movie theme. These songs, however, did NOT get a nomination. Something about the “original song” thing. Eternal glory is better than an Oscar, so let’s get rolling with the alphabetical part of the list.
Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf
Ever seen that meme on Facebook that says, “The most disturbing thing is when nobody worries about ‘Born to Be Wild’ where they find the head out on the highway.”
It’s widely thought that the line “heavy metal thunder” is what inspired people to call the music “heavy metal.” And it’s a no-brainer that this song is eternally linked with the film Easy Rider.
Not necessarily the first “counter-culture” film, but Easy Rider was the first widely successful one. Peter Fonda (who produced it) and Dennis Hopper (the director) starred with Jack Nicholson (whose character obviously believed what they showed in Reefer Madness ) in an independent movie about the independent spirit.
I absolutely LOATHE the ending of the movie. It seems that we’re sort of seeing a repeat of that today: what you don’t understand, you kill.
The song is absolutely legendary, so much so that the song is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Grammy Hall of Fame. Steppenwolf continued their transportation theme with another big hit, “Magic Carpet Ride.”
One of the prime examples of how the right song in the right place can create an iconic cinematic moment.

Recorded by Steppenwolf

Familiar with the song but not the movie. I mean I've heard of the movie Easy Rider but don't think I ever saw it.

It is quite the snapshot of late 60s hippie culture. Except the end, which is historic American stupidity.

Beats “Danger Zone,” IMO. (And since I’m in the G’s you’ll notice that song didn’t make the list!)

@DWDavis — after Caddyshack you could sing the lyrics to any Kenny Loggins movie song to the music of another one.

@FourWalls I like "Danger Zone," but there was always something a little too generic feeling about it.

I don't consider this song heavy metal; but I do love it. Steppenwolf! Yeah!

Love the song! And the movie. Yes, a "Sad" ending. Seems violent acts against other people is embedded in certain people's DNA or something. Doesn't matter where you live. I've seen it most recently on the news in the NYC subway.
Anyway, I also liked "The "Wild One" with Marlon Brando. Different types of bikers though. And how about the Clint Eastwood comedy "Every Which Way but Loose" with the nutty motorcycle club the "Black Widows."

And don’t forget my favorite, the Black Widows, led by Eric Von Zipper!

@FourWalls Some funny lines in that movie. Here's a funny scene...
Elmo: [shows Philo his Widow tattoo] You see that?
Philo Beddoe: An arm?
Elmo: No, that!
Philo Beddoe: A tattoo
Elmo : He don't know what this means.
Frank : [shows Orville his Widow tattoo] Do you see that?
Orville Boggs : [sneezes] Ah-choo! Oh, sorry.
Philo Beddoe : Two tattoos.
Elmo : Them's Black Widows.
Frank : Did you know that more people die from black widows than rattlers every year?
Orville Boggs : Is that right?
Frank : Yeah, that's right.
Orville Boggs : Well, listen, I sure do appreciate knowing that because most of the people I know just - puh - step on them and squish them.

Among my all-time favourite songs, I considered it to be my loving Sid's theme song he certainly was born to be wild as he dashed about the garden in Latvia particularly on windy days, Nice memories and awesome song,

A great song and a really good insight about Easy Rider too. I heard someone do the song at a karaoke bar once and it was an excellent performance.

Thank you. There’s a lot to be learned from that movie, lessons that haven’t been learned, sadly.

I don’t blame you, I don’t like un-nice endings, either. But it is a “typical American” ending, sadly.

They took their name after a Hermann Hesse novel Der Steppenwolf. John Kay was born in what was then the German Reich in 1944.
