That Was Unfortunate

This weekend was something I had looked forward to for weeks. Snowshoes were purchased after consulting with friends and family. Saturday morning I drove to Grand Digue to meet with other geocachers. The first part of our adventure would be walking across Shediac Bay to Skull Island, the, on to Shediac island for about 5 hours of hiking before walking back across the ice. I had barely walked out more than 100 feet (30 metres) onto the ice when my feet slipped out from under me. There I sat, serious dent in my pride…wrist is a bit sore, but I’ll be fine (I hope). We continued across the frozen bay (temperature -14°C) much more carefully. Walking about a kilometre we arrived at Skull Island. To climb up the embankment we needed to use a rope to pull ourselves up. That’s when I realized I had a problem. I could wriggle my fingers…move my hands…a bit painful….but I’m not sure why I can’t grasp the rope with my left hand. One of my group was a nurse….she looked at my wrist suggesting it might be broken. No good. The other hikers helped me get my snowshoes on so I was less likely to fall again and we continued another half kilometre to Shediac Island. We hiked for about 2 hours before most of the other hikers had any idea I was in pain. It was arranged for me to be taken back to the mainland by ATV. Once back at my car I drove myself home (40 minutes) and then had my husband drive me to the ER where X-rays confirmed it. My wrist was broken.

Well, too bad that happened and spoiled the weekend. So, I suppose you will have a cast for a while now? Wow, such a big cast too!

@Morleyhunt It looks like it will be difficult to do much with it on. How long did they say?

@JamesHxstatic I go back in 2 weeks. I’m guessing 6-8 weeks. (I’m not 16 anymore)

The cast is plaster, not fibreglass….mostly because of the swelling.

@Morleyhunt I’ve never gotten into that or the challenges. Souvenirs I once in awhile go for but rarely.

I’m trying to fill my calendar. Hubby has been coming with me on the days I “need” to find one.

I saw the surgeon this morning. There was minimal displacement so no surgery. They manipulated everything back where it’s supposed to be and I have a cast for the immediate future.

Oh, what a dreadful shame! You did well to continue as long as you did and to drive yourself back home. No more quilting for a little while but you'll be able to catch up on your reading. I think you read too, don't you?

The last few days have been challenging…I can do some sewing (grandkids are finishing projects for competition). Reading has kept me distracted.

@Morleyhunt Wrists have such a lot of bones and can take a while to heal. I hope it doesn't take too long.

I think that you must have a very high pain tolerance level, way to keep on working through any pain that you may have had, you're a real trooper. I hope that the wrist heals in good time.

@Morleyhunt Oh, yes, I know... I sprained my wrist two years ago. That's not the same as breaking it but I still couldn't do anything with that hand. It sucks!

hope you heal fast for your next adventure! no doubt the cold weather helped in your pain threshold, because if it was warm, swelling, bruising and pain wouldve been happening soon after.

The bruising has been minimal. The swelling mostly caused by my doing much more than I should have been doing.
