Unfair blame

I'm really starting to feel the cultural gap now. It's like over here, it's just expected that you take care of your parents when they get old, whether you live with them or not.

@thehazelsister That's not something that usually happens in the US. After the kid reaches 18, most of them get a job, find their own place to live and move away from their parents.

@DaddyEvil I've always had this dream of living on my own... Just having my own space and independence... But my dad just wouldn't let me. He kept saying that it's too expensive to support two households, but I knew that was just an excuse. I mean, I'm perfectly capable of supporting myself

@thehazelsister are you the only children or do you have siblings. You should talk these things openly with your father

@Icydoll My sister's still in college, so she can't really contribute much financially. You're right. I think it's time for me to have a serious talk with him about it soon.

Hopefully... It's tough when things get tense at home.

We never discussed how we were going to split the rent for the month. But somehow my dad just assumed that it was going to be my responsibility since I've been working It's really frustrating because I'm trying my best to contribute, but he keeps pointing fingers at me. I just wish we could have an open and honest conversation about this without any blaming or shaming.

@thehazelsister - You should, as you also work you are not the one to blame if no one specified who has to do something.

@LadyDuck Just wondering, is it okay to feel like my father takes things for granted sometimes? I guess it's also tied to our cultural emphasis on filial piety. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

I had the same thought, but I haven't mustered the courage to bring up the topic yet.
