Food, Medicines

I plan my meals very carefully because there are a few health issues l have which l would not want to make worse. I have made my food my medicine - and it has worked well so far. However l must admit - not in ever case but enough to make me continue on this path. Do you eat anything you want, anytime you want? Do you notice a difference in the Symptons of health conditions when you eat certain foods? What food or drink would you find it extremely hard to give up.? Pixabay image.

I eat and drink everything in moderation. I would find giving up salty snacks like Doritos and potato chips very difficult. I'd rather have them than a sugary food any time. I did give up soda, coffee with milk and sweeteners, and a lot of processed foods without a problem.

Moderation is indeed the key. Smaller portions also important. I too would prefer to give up sugary foods than salty ones. I use a minimum amount of salt anyway.

@Kandae11 That's so true. I also exchanged salt on my homemade popcorn for cayenne. It's a good thing I like spicy! Some things need salt to bring out the natural flavors. A little bit can't hurt.

@DianneN l read somewhere that we could die if we had no sodium whatsoever in our body.

It works for some things, for others as the saying goes - " the horse has already gone through the gate."

I eat everything except sugar as I am diabetic. If my blood sugar goes uncontrolled then I will have to be very conscious about my food.

@Kandae11 I don't drink liquid having sugar content. It's better to take regulations than to repent afterwards.

I know many people who are diabetic and it is hard for them to eliminate some foods. You have to be careful about hidden sugars - not only the teaspoons you might add to tea or porridge. Some foods convert to sugar in the body. Of course, moderation is key and l do not think just a little of it would be harmful.

I could not give up coffee, I need to drink my coffee in the morning. I gave up all salty snacks, but I prepare something sweet to have every evening while we watch TV. A small custard tart, a Swiss Roll filled with whipped cream, nothing garbage, only home made. There are certain foods that make me feel unwell, some kind of cheese with ripened-surface (like Brie and Camambert), all cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflowers).

@Kandae11 - You must learn to listen to your body and avoid what is supposed to be healthy but it's not healthy for you.

It seems that some things work for some and and the same thing might not work for another persons. Like cruciferous vegetables - those you mentioned - are chock full of all the good things our bodies need. Yet those foods make you feel unwell. Everyone should know what works for them and what does not.

I eat pretty much what I want. The one major change is red meat which I have limited. I definitely should eat better. My bloodwork results have been good over the years, so perhaps I am getting an assist from heredity. But it is definitely my Kryptonite and something I need to improve. I would find it really difficult to give up pizza and cheese nips

I also have health challenges and so I have to be careful when eating. It is about a month and I have finally eliminated every food that irritates me. The hardest item to give up was salt. The first week was a real fight. Now it's a little easier. Let's see if I can keep going without using any salt.

@Kandae11 I have heard that there is a tribe that has never used salt. Some doctors recommend a no salt diet. Some say that there is enough sodium in the plant food. I personally like salt but I do not overdo it.

Good going, especially when you see results. Moderation is key and we should not give up salt entirely. It is a necessary addition for our body to function however - less of it is best.

It's good you can balance your food intake as medicine to keep you healthy. I know some foods have wonderful health benefits. It would be very hard for me to give up eggs and bananas. They are my staple. Even with the high price of eggs, I need my eggs every day. I saw the price of bananas the last time I was in the store. I was shocked at how high they are too.

@Kandae11 Yes, they are. I would be very sad if I needed to give them up.

It would be sad if you have to give them up because both have many health benefits. The egg is often referred to as the perfect protein and bananas of course have fiber, potassium , minerals etc.

I rarely have an appetite for some unknown reason. I eat light meals most of the time. I drink coffee each morning, one cup, and water the rest of the time.

I am now a careful eater. I try very hard to eat healthy. It's not hard to fix food that can be delicious and healthy, it just takes a bit more planning and doing. In my case, it has really helped. I'm glad you are doing that, too.

@Kandae11 I am a firm believer that it does help to have a small treat, but not constantly. Once in a while, doesn't hurt and looking forward to it is nice--that yummy cupcake or a cookie or something. But I am careful, even with that.

So far I can eat anything that I want. I only have asthma. And that only brothers me a couple of times a year. I buy fresh fruits and vegetables every week. I do love fish and chicken so I fix both a couple of times a week. Of course I have to have tacos, burritos and spaghetti a couple of times a month. And meats a couple times a month.

I have a bit of chicken about three times a year - on special occasions like some holidays including Christmas. I have not tasted red meat since 2005.

Like you I've eliminated certain foods due to some health issues but the one drink I doubt I could give up would be coffee. I have learned to drink it black so giving up the cream and sugar is sacrifice enough for me No, I don't eat anything I want and try to stick to healthy foods with an occasional treat.

Coffee is an antioxidant with a lot of health benefits . However additives like lots of sugar and heavy cream could detract from those benefits. Everything in moderation.
