Signing in from Co. Mayo in Ireland

We are now in Co. Mayo in Ireland. We had a good flight over although it was a very long flight. We flew from Perth to Dubai (11 hours) then two hours later, flew another seven hours to Dublin where our son met us. The problem with the car licences has been resolved and we can start our holiday in earnest now. I don’t usually watch films in planes as I often find it hard to get the sound level acceptable but this time I persevered and watched quite a few films. It certainly passes the time nicely. I watched Mrs Harris Goes To Paris, an art-type film about a donkey EO, then Casablanca because it’s a classic I’ve never watched before. I also watched Full of Grace, a Spanish film about a nun who turns around the life of some orphan boys. It’s based on fact and I’ll write more about it later. The photo is from a previous visit but was taken in Co. Mayo, at the Country Life Museum. We might go back there later today.

I expect you've gone with a plan for where you'll go etc. If there's any room when you're in mayo visit achill island. I've been there quite a few times to meet family...it's a very nice place and it is on the atlantic way...genuinely worth a visit if you can make it.

Our son has been talking about Achill Island too so hopefully we'll get there. I'll put in a good word for it. Our niece's son will join us on Easter Monday for a week or so so it might be a good trip to take while he is here.

Thanks for the additional link. We watched The Banshees of Inisherin just the other night and it was mostly filmed on Achill Island.

It is so wonderful that you are all together with your son and everything worked out. My family is from Ireland, so they are a bit biased, but they always claim that Ireland is the most beautiful country in the world, second to Canada of course. We hail from Tipperary.

@JudyEv Based on the stories that have been passed down over the generations, i cannot help but to believe that it is rugged, otherwise they never would have withstood the conditions that they endured when they first came over to Canada. My Dad's 3 sisters all took a trip together to Ireland after the last of them retired from teaching, and although they found it beautiful to see where our ancestors came from, they also spoke of the harshness of the land itself.

All of Ireland is pretty but can be quite rugged too. The lady next to me on the last flight was a Kiwi (NZ) but was going home to Tipperary. It's a pretty county too.

@JudyEv For the sake of getting where you need to go, it is worth it no matter what. Although it would be nice and faster to just be beamed up to your destination like they do on Star Trek .

Hah! I was wondering what leaves were doing on the ground. Unless you had brought them from Down Under for artistic purposes. I do like the statue(s).

I'm glad you like the sculpture. It was donated by the Sinaporean government in recognition of the contribution made by Brother Joseph McNulty's contribution to the arts in Singapore. Brother McNally came from Co. Mayo.

Glad that you reached there safely. Now enjoy your stay there. Hope you can visit the museum again. That's some nice sculpture in the picture. Whenever I go for any flight more than 4 hours, I watch movies to keep me entertained. The flights to US used be long and I would watch all the movies there on the list

With the modern planes you would never run out of movies to watch. There are also TV series, documentaries, music to listen to - the list goes on and on.

We keep coming across all these lovely sculptures although some are very sombre. There are a lot commemorating the famine periods of Ireland's history.
